Wednesday Social Bowls Report
Humid weather greeted 40 players last Wednesday that saw a top temperature of 19 degrees and bowlers reported the greens were running well.
Rink One was to Fred Donaldson and Noel Millar’s liking as they strolled to first prize of $90.00 and a drink card each; Fred and Noel’s opponents were Gavin Borwick and Neville Coleman.
The second winning rink prize was won by the team of Peter Verlardo and Chris Morrissy, who played Nicole and Noel Smith on rink 10; Peter and Chris took home $50.00 for their efforts.
The losing rink consolation prize of $20.00 was won by the combo of Ian Febey and Alan Mackey, a visitor from Altona; Ian and Alan played on rink Six, where their opponents were Vicki and Col Withers.
The first Lucky Number raffle prize of $25.00 was won by Garry Seamer and the second Lucky Number prize of $15.00 was won by Gavin Borwick.
Social bowls will continue through the pennant season but will move to Thursdays when pennant commences.
More details will be provided next week on when Wednesday Social will move to Thursdays.
Weekend Pennant Preview
Weekend pennant commences this Saturday, October 10.
YMGCR are fielding four sides this season with teams in A1, A3, B1 and B5 for the 2026/27 season.
Last year our lower side was B2; this year the region has geographically grouped the sides in the B sections, hence YMGCR having a side in the B5 section.
This Saturday, it’s a case of back to the future for the A1s as they again journey to Lavington for the opening fixture.
A3 plays host to Howlong at the golf club, with B1 playing away to Moyhu, and B5 entertained by Howlong at Howlong Golf Club.
A review of the first round of weekend matches and a preview of the first round of midweek pennant will be provided next week.
Friday Social Bowls Review
As mentioned in the last report, last week was the final instalment of Friday Social Bowls for 2026.
It was a great day and the generosity of Jill and Ron Lamson, who organised the footy themed raffle prizes, needs to be acknowledged.
Once again, this year was a bumper one for Friday Social Bowls; Vicki Withers, Lynne Baxter and the match committees again did sterling work to make Fridays a success.
The club also thanks those players from surrounding clubs who regularly supported Fridays; we regularly played host to bowlers from Katandra West, Tungamah, Barooga, Yarrawonga Bowls Club and Club Mulwala.
Thank you to all the YMGCR bowlers who supported Friday Social this year … we’ll see you in 2027.
Riddle me this…
Last week we set readers the challenge of correctly answering the following riddle:
Q: Before you use me, you have to break me. What am I? The answer: An egg!
This was the last in our series of riddles for this year; we hope you have enjoyed them.
We’ll resume riddle me this after the completion of the pennant season.
Until next week, good bowling.
Tungamah Bowls Club
Practice is on the go at the Tungamah Bowls Club and it’s terrific to see familiar faces after a few months of absence, both bowlers and especially those loyal supporters who are back.
In September we competed for the Western Border Challenge Cup; this commenced last year with clubs from Club Mulwala, Yarrawonga, Cobram and Tungamah competing.
It’s a terrific format, with all clubs competing at the same venue on the same green each round.
Each club hosts one challenge where players enjoy a BBQ or food of preference prior to play commencing.
Tungamah won the inaugural cup but struggled this year, with competition strong and competitive.
We won against Club Mulwala but finished the challenge last, with final scores close.
Cobram were the victors for 2026, with the final played at Cobram on Friday, September 25.
This year was a great introduction to bowls for our new bowlers.
Local young gun Hudson Crawford showed he has the potential to be a great asset to our club both on and off the green; his application, concentration and demeaner is to be applauded.
Carol Sheahan, wife of our vice president Michael, is a welcome new female member to the club and showed us she has the goods.
Jack Costigan was given the skipping job for the first time and handled the job well; he had nothing but positive, encouraging comments to his team members.
Cousin Tom is developing into a top bowler.
With the talent of some players after another season under their belt, Tunga hopes for a positive Pennant season.
Saturday Pennant starts on October 10 with A3’s travelling to Beechworth and B1’s playing at home to St James.
Midweek Pennant starts on October 13 and we travel to Club Corowa; it appears the draw never changes, it’s just the dates that are amended.
60 and Over was held at Tungamah on October 6.
