ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls
Tuesday, Feb 15 – Midweek Pennant– Round 11
Division A1 – ClubMulwala 36 (1) lost to Wangaratta 77 (13)
Although one team managed a draw, and probably should have had a win, the other two teams were comprehensively beaten handing the ClubMulwala side a bowling lesson by Wangaratta who now sit fairly comfortable in second position at the pointy end of the season.
The club should remember that this is only the second season at A1 level and the group have won four games compared to one last year.
Results as follows:
Kay Smith, Graeme Arnold, Daryl Richmond and Stephen McPhee 19 drew with Laurence McDonald, Gregory McDonald, Paul King and Lorna Martinelli 19.
Daryl Dighton, Malcolm Miller, Peter Humphreys and Wayne Dowsey 6 lost to Trevor Selwood, Jodie Fruend, Leon Quartermain and Graeme Smith 29.
Eugene Hodson, Mick Millsom, Mark Smith and Bev Norwood 11 lost to Ian Brindlecombe, Dylan Filuk, Barbara McDonald and Graham Oats 26.
Ladder Position – 7.
Division B1 – ClubMulwala 55 (12) defeated Moyhu 53 (2)
A hard fought win in a very close game, at an away venue, speaks volumes of this sides tenacity and how they ‘gel’ together to get the required result.
Results as follows:
Barry Pitt, Jodi Powell, Carmen Mangan and Anita Albert 22 defeated David Waring, Julie White, Sue Dinning and Murray White 15.
Loris Lochhead, Jan Morton, Betty Richmond and Jan Martin 11 lost to Neil Magee, Joe Northey, Angela Delaney and Louise Baker 18.
Sam Smith, Faye Cook, Graham Albert and Judy Laughlin 22 defeated Stuart Brain, Max Baker, Christine Magee and Lynette Northey 20.
Ladder Position – 1.
Division B2 – ClubMulwala 53 (2) lost to Corowa RSL 56 (12)
A good effort by the new B2 side just going down to Corowa RSL by a measly three points. It’s not for want of trying and this side will be better for the game.
Results as follows:
Frank Exton, Doug Chessum, Brian Pearson and Nicole McPherson 13 lost to Peter Mills, Wendy Robb, Daryl Brown and James Ward 22.
Joan Connor, Nolar Mongor, Laurie Leary and Phill Norwood 20 lost to Sam Nixon, Frank Gee, Roseann Prentice and Alma Muir 23.
Ray Tovey, Barry Martin, Wade McPherson and Pam Lefevre 20 defeated Laurie Way, Greg Keyte, Anne Smith and Donald Macqueen 11.
Ladder Position – 7.
Saturday, Feb 19 – Weekend Pennant – Round 12
Division A3 – ClubMulwala 98 (18) defeated Milawa 68 (0)
A really good game and this is one of those times where the end score does not really reflect the battle that took place. Each way mini breaks were popping up on three of the four rinks all day and fightbacks and counter fightbacks were the norm.
A great win overall by the A3 Ladies and Men and this keeps the final hopes alive (just).
It is up to us now. The club should mention just how good the Milawa bowlers are and they are a pleasure to play against. Lovely people.
Results as follows:
Gary Parker, Graeme Arnold, Daryl Richmond and Jan Morton 28 defeated Dave Allan, Kevin Allan, John Blackwell and Cyril Ciavarella 16.
Kay Smith, Eugene Hodson, Graham Albert and Stephen McPhee 27 defeated Terry Hallinan, Glen Allan, Harry May and Norman Hallet 17.
Daryl Dighton, Malcolm Miller, Peter Humphreys and Jan Martin 18 defeated Peta Mattys, Mark Bell, Michelle Van Praagh and Jane Osmotherly 15.
Trevor Loe, Mick Millsom, Kerry Merrett and Bev Norwood 25 defeated Marty Lane, Colin Reid, Geoffrey Robinson and Lynn Allan 20.
Ladder Position – 6.
Division B2 – ClubMulwala 52 (11) defeated YMGCR 51 (3)
Cannot get a result much closer unless it is a draw. Another hard fought game by the B2’s however they did not have it all their own way.
YMGCR, played really good bowls, (as you would expect them to), and fought hard to the end. Looking down and out the B2’s put in a really good effort and it was only on the last end of the match that the winners were decided. Well done all participants.
Results as follows:
James Murdoch, Jodi Powell, Faye Cook and Anita Albert 13 lost to Terry Matthews, Neville Coleman, John Millar and Robyn Balfour 22.
Cliff Morton, Sam Smith, Nola Mongor and Barry Martin 18 drew with William Butterworth, Lilliana Borwick, Gavin Borwick and Sue Evans 18.
Loris Lochhead, Betty Richmond, Wayne Dowsey and Judy Laughlin 21 defeated Noel Millar, John Wenzel, Carolyn Bostin and Kurt Bleckwehl 11.
Ladder Position – 2.
Division B3 – ClubMulwala 58 (12) defeated Corowa Civic 49 (2)
A good win by the B3 side to maintain a position where it is possible that they can play in the finals.
Results as follows:
Frank Exton, Ray Tovey, Carmen Mangan and Russell Cook 23 defeated Joan Wood, Arthur Kercheval, Haydn Elliot and Lynne Ewison 15.
Mark Smith, Doug Chessum, John Lefevre and Bob Keats 18 lost to Peter Howell, Keith Little, Ross Ewison and Adam Larkins 19.
Joan Connor, Margaret Pretty, Laurie Leary and Pam Lefevre 17 defeated Sue Curtis, Ned Young, Richard Keith and John Curtis 15.
Ladder Position – 3.

YMGCR Bowls
Weekend Pennant had the A1’s play Rutherglen away and won 16/84 to 2/63. The best rink of the day belonged to Michael Szabo who won 21/10 with the skip having an excellent day, Jimy Lefevre’s rink had a good all-round performance from the whole side and won 24/16.
Scotty Widdison’s rink was solid again winning 25/17, Ryan Davies lost 14/20 and this still keeps 2nd on the ladder.
A2’s travelled to Chiltern and is traditionally a tough road trip and it proved to be losing 2/61 to 16/85.
The only bright spot for the day was the form of Robby Hummel’s rink who have not lost a game since they have come together and they won 22/17. Cat’s rink jumped out of the blocks but the Chiltern rink got themselves back in the game however the YMGCR boys fought it out losing 15/22.
Brown’s rink was always on the back foot, but they couldn’t hold vital shots at crucial times, and they lost 11/18.
Rob “Pinkie” Lidgerwood lost 13/28 but YMGCR still sit top of the ladder... next week YMGCR play 2nd side Myrtleford away. Win and YMGCR are guaranteed a top 2 finish.
The A4’s play 3rd place Wodonga at home and in a nail biter lost 2/73 to 16/78. Marie Whitehead ‘s rink had a day out and won 25/15. Doddy’s rink are always in the game and once again they were but lost just going down 15/17. Garry Hart skipped this week and his rink went down 16/20; Pricey lost 17/26.
YMGCR sit 5th on the table only 14 points out of 4th spot, this side is very competitive and just need an ounce of luck and they could go all the way.
After last week’s win, the B2’s played a top 4 side in ClubMulwala at home. YMGCR pushed them all the way and in an agonising finish came up one shot short losing 3/51 to 11/52.
Terry Matthews rink once again put in a mighty effort and won 22/13. Billy Butterworth’s rink played an exciting draw 18/18 all and Noel Millar lost 11/21.
Mid-Week Pennant had the A1’s host Myrtleford at home and won 12/65 to 2/55. Best rink was Garry Sanders with an impressive win 23/12. Stuart McNeill had a battle all day winning 26/23 (he probably had other things on his mind as he is getting married this week.... all the best from all your club mates).
Well the great run of wins has finally came to a halt because Anne Miles has finally been beaten, losing 16/20.
She has not lost a game of Mid-Week Pennant for nearly 2 years or more but the scribe is sure she would have been only interested in the big scoreboard. They still sit on top of the ladder.
A2’s travelled to St James and won 12/69 to 2/58. YMGCR Bowls always have a tough battle because this small club is very competitive and are hard to beat on their tricky green. They are a massive handful and to come away with the points is a bonus.
Micky Vaughan’s rink took a few ends to sort out the green and came away winning 26/15. Ray Brown’s rink was always in front but lost a couple of ends in the end but still won 20/16.
Allen Goudge jumped out of the blocks leading 7/0 after 2 ends, then the momentum change just as fast and they were in deep trouble. But to their credit they came back to lose 23/27.
They still sit 2nd on the ladder and next week play top of the table leader in Corowa Civic at Civic... must win!
The A3’s had the beautiful road trip to Dederang (don’t think YMGCR have played them before) and after a 8 hour round trip came up with gut wrenching defeat losing 2/65 to 12/67.
Les Balfour’s rink were the stand outs winning 29/13, Danny McNeill had a close battle losing 20/26 and Rob Hummel lost 16/28.
They are 6th on the ladder but only 2 points out of the 4. this makes the next couple of weeks vital.
In another tight game had the B1’s losing to Myrtleford 2/60 to 12/63 at home. Ross Lloyd rinks are playing good bowls and won 31/15.
Judy Goudge had a tough day losing 12/21 and Mary Essex ‘s rink lost 18/27. (maybe Mary was tired because she and her lead). One Barbie Verbunt thought they were playing at Myrtleford and had to catch an early bus ... anyway they beat the crowd and got a good car park.
In the State Over 60’s Men’s Singles held at Bendigo last week saw Garry Sanders playing for O&M but unfortunately he ran into a red hot opponent and lost in the first round.
Garry also represented the O&M in the pairs with Wodonga’s Peter McLarty and they made to the Semi Finals but they just lost.
In the Ladies Section Laureen Smith played and she made it through to the quarter final (last 8) in the singles and with her pairs partner Clarie Sanders made it to the Semi’s (last 4).
What a fantastic effort by YMGCRs 3 teammates for getting there in the first place and going so deep into the tournament.
YMGCR Ladies Single Final. The game was played between Laureen Smith and Anne Miles. Anne jumped out to a strong lead and Laureen was in deep trouble, but Laureen got the mat and went long and she dominated from that point on to win 25/16.
This week “RINK OF THE WEEK” goes to Les Balfour, Ian Morffew, Lyn Baxter and Sue Evans.
On Thursday, March 10 YMGCR are having a BBQ starting at 5pm. This is for ALL pennant players (Midweek and Weekend). Please look for a list on the noticeboard and put your name down so Morf can work out his catering.
It is just a small team bonding before the finals.

Pennant results –
Midweek (Round 11)
Tuesday, February 15 - A1 played Benalla at home and won with just the 1 rink getting up. Well done to Richard Hermassoo’s team on their 21 shot win.
Ladder Position 4th. Only 2 more games before the finals so if A1 can keep it up they will be playing in them.
B1 played Wareena Park at home and won with 2 rinks getting up and the other losing by just the 1 shot.
Best winning rink was Keith Allender’s team getting up by 18 shots. Ladder Position 2nd. It would be great for the B1’s to keep this position so they get that 2nd chance in the finals.
Weekend (round 12)
Saturday, February 19 - A1 played Corowa RSL at Corowa and had a win with 3 of the 4 rinks getting up. Best winning rink was Larry Thompson’s team getting up by 7 shots. Ladder position 6th.
A3 played Wangaratta at home and lost with just the 1 rink getting up. Well done to Tom Dodd’s team, it was a tight game all day but they got the win by 1 shot. Ladder Position 8th.
B2 was to play Mansfield at home but Mansfield unfortunately had to forfeit this game giving Yarra Bowls a walkover. Ladder Position 3rd.
