YMGCR Bowls
Weekend Pennant had the A1’s play Benalla at home and had a convincing victory winning 18/108 to 0/60.
Best rink this week was Mick Szabo’s rink winning 33/15. Jenny Lefevre rink also had a good win 30/14 with a good contribution from the whole team.
Scott Widdison rink was solid all day and won 25/15. Les Spencer had the hard battle of the day and won 20/16. This now puts them 3rd on the ladder just 8 points from top spot.
The A2’s travelled to Corowa Civic who were 2nd on the ladder. The team played terrific bowls to come home with a well earnt win 16/87 to 2/60.
After a shocking start to the season the team is now gelling and playing good bowls.
Laureen Smith’s rink dominated from start to finish and was always in control and cruised home winning 26/8.
Ray Brown rink lead all day and won 29/16, Cat had a tough battle all day but to their credit they came rattling home to win 19/15.
Robert Lidgerwood dropped a 6 on the 1st end and battled to go down 13/21. They are also 3rd on the ladder and only 2 points from top.
A4’s played Corowa Civic at home and won 16/95 to 2/65. The stars of the day were Marie Whitehead rink winning 31/15.
Old Ian Morffew rink just keeps on winning week after week and doing their jobs and once again they won 21/13.
Pricey’s rink got the job done winning 24/16, Bobby Evans had a tight battle all day and just went down 19/21. They currently 5th on the ladder but only 4 points off top.
B2’s travelled to St James and in a tight game just going down 2/62 to 12/68.
Terry Matthews rink got up in a tough game winning 21/18, Billy Butterworth rink got a flying start but St James’ rink pegged them back with YMGCR losing 22/26. (new bowler Denise Trubiano filled in and performed very well).
Also Marica McGrillen got a very late call up and her rink just went down 19/24.
Midweek Pennant had the A1’s play Benalla at home and won 14/70 to 0/42. Best rink was Anne Miles who won 23/10, Spencer’s rink continues on their winning way to notch up a 26/14 win and Garry Sanders got up after a hard battle winning 21/18.
The A2’s played Kiewa away and just coming up short going down 2/49 to 12/54. The big winner was last minute stand in skipper Allan Goudge who won 20/13 and Ray Brown lost 12/20.
The other rink skippered by Marcia McGrillen had a seesawing game all day and the 62 end of the game YMGCR held a 1 shot lead on the score board and was holding 3 good shoots in the head, the Kiewa skip played his last bowl and move the jack to give them 3 shots and they won 21/17.
A3’s played Corowa RSL at Corowa and won 14/66 to 0/52, Marie Whitehead had a good win 25/17, Danny McNeill won 21/17 and Les Balfour won 20/18.
B1’s played Wareena Park at home and won 12/70 to 2/49. Ian Morffew won 34/14, Ross Lloyd won 24/9 and Mary Essex lost 12/26.
On Wednesday was the Semi Final of the Ladies Club Singles and after a 3-hour battle Anne Miles beat Claire Sanders 25/21.
Anne will now play Laureen Smith in the final (sure this game will be a beauty as these 2 champions have faced off before and there is never much in it).
On Thursday was the O&M Over 60’s Men and Women Championships. The women played at YMGCR and with only 9 teams entered (very disappointing for a region of the size).
YMGCR had Claire Sanders / Laureen Smith and Anne Miles /Sharron Warfe (Benalla) win their respective sections. They will play off and the winner will progress to the final against a composite team who got the bye.
Over at ClubMulwula the men played and Les Spencer /Gary Presnell won their section and Garry Sanders and Peter McLarty (Wodonga) also made it through.
Spencer will play a team from Rutherglen in the next round while Sanders gets a bye.
On Sunday was the O&M Pairs Championship’s. In the ladies Anne Miles/Claire Sanders and Laureen Smith play with her daughter Rhoanna (Wangaratta). They will play next week at Benalla starting at 9.30.
In the men’s Garry Sanders playing with Wangaratta’s Ian Brimbcombe got through.
Unfortunately, 2 YMGCR teams clash in one section Szabo/Vaughan against the Lefevre’s and the Lefevre’s just missing out by 4 shots on going through to the next round.
Wednesday Social bowls had 18 bowlers and the winners were with 2 wins and +18 were Robert Lidgerwood, Bill Jenkins and Noel Millar.
Runners up with+12 were Garry Hart, Rob Hummel land Frank Lieberg. Jackpot went to Les Balfour, Kurt Bleckwehl and Neville Coleman and the lucky number was claimed by Rob Hummel.
And now for the most important award of the week. “RINK OF THE WEEK “ goes to with a score of 34/14 is Ian Morffew, Judy Goudge. Sharron Klodinski and Daryl Davey.
ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls
Tuesday, November 30 – Midweek Pennant – Round 3
Division A1 – ClubMulwala 43 (0) lost to Wodonga 80 (14)
A hard, difficult day at the office against a formidable opponent on their home turf who deserved their win.
ClubMulwala just have to keep plugging away at this level and keep learning from some of the best bowlers in this division.
Results as follows:
Peter Humphreys, Daryl Dighton, Malcolm Miller and Jan Martin 11 lost to Robert Taylor, Ray Moon, Garry Howlett and Julie Jones 40.
Kay Smith, Graeme Arnold, Liz Murdoch and Stephen McPhee 16 lost to Mark Morgan, Mark Westwick, Cheryl Morgan and Alice Bounader 17.
Mick Millsom, Mark Smith, Kerry Merrett and Kim Lefevre 16 lost to Brian Arundel, James Sharp, Bob Harbridge and Elaine Gilby 23.
Ladder Position: 7.
Division B1 – Club Mulwala 93 (14) defeated Corowa Civic 33 (0)
A great win by the B1 side who are doing extremely well early in the season. This is despite ins and outs with a number of changes to the side as the selectors are working hard finding the personnel to settle and get the right selection for all three teams.
With an additional team added this year it makes the job just that little more difficult.
Despite the selection difficulties this side gels well and with some very good leadership and new blood are heading in the right direction.
A special mention must go to Eugene Hodson, Daryl Richmond, Anita Albert and Wade McPherson for achieving an ‘8’ against their opponents.
People play this game for years, even decades and not achieve this. Keep up the good work.
Results as follows:
Loris Lochhead, Wayne Downey, Betty Richmond and Jan Morton 30 defeated Joan Wood, Marie Lewsey, Genise McFarlane and Jan Wandel-Webber 12.
Cliff Morton, Barry Martin, Graham Albert and Russell Cook 30 defeated Judy Willett, Ross Ewison, Lynne Ewison and Brian McCarthy 11.
Eugene Hodson, Daryl Richmond, Anita Albert and Wade McPherson 33 defeated Douglas Castles, Ned Young, Reg Moloney and Donald Norman 10.
Ladder Position: 1.
Division B2 – Club Mulwala 45 (0) lost to Chiltern 70 (14)
A new team with people playing in unfamiliar positions with adjustments having to be made on a weekly basis doesn’t help.
Hopefully as the season progresses, they will gather some momentum, teamwork and settle down and get a few wins under their belts.
It’s not for want of trying as this team are very capable bowlers and have the will to win. Keep plugging away, it will come.
Results as follows:
John Thurling, Doug Chessum, Joan Connor and Nicole McPherson 17 lost to Pauline Clearson, Leon Price, Helen Stokes and Ian Bell 26.
Bev Norwood, Faye Cook, Carmen Mangan and Brian Pearson 16 lost to Allan Hamilton, Isabel Edgar, Graham Cassidy and Stephen Woodburne 23.
Frank Exton, Judith Laughlin, Laurie Leary and Pam Lefevre 12 lost to Dianne Peacock, Colin Glanville, Gerard Burdeu and Christine Cassidy 21.
Ladder Position: 7.
Saturday, December 4 – Weekend Pennant – Round 4
Division A3 – Club Mulwala 88 (18) defeated Beechworth 60 (0)
This was a good win for a side struggling for form. A number of changes have been made by the selectors and it appears to have worked.
This was a very difficult day with swirling wind on a fast green and both sides struggled throughout different stages of the game. Thankfully some potential was able to be reached at the pointy end of the game.
Results as follows:
Gary Parker, Graeme Arnold, Daryl Richmond and Jan Morton 17 defeated Neil Whitehead, Liam Robinson, Chris Fitzpatrick and Keith McIntosh 16.
Daryl Dighton, John Thurling, Malcolm Miller and Stephen McPhee 26 defeated Bill Walch, Michael Walch, Graeme Pool and Heather Fitzpatrick 12.
Peter Humphreys, Eugene Hodson, Bev Norwood and Kim Lefevre 21 defeated Eathan Piddington, Ian Murray, Tony Chambeyron 14.
Mick Millsom, Kerry Merrett, Betty Richmond and Judy Laughlin 24 defeated Barry Fitzpatrick, Richard Bayliss, Stuart Cameron and Allan Mansfield 18.
Ladder Position: 3.
Division B2 – Club Mulwala 64 (14) defeated Corowa RSL 37 (0)
A good first win for the season against a team above them on the ladder. The draw in this division has a bye which will make it a little harder to get an accurate indication of where they are at and how they are shaping up against the opposition.
There is a lot of talent playing in this division and all they can do is keep winning. Well done for this week.
Results as follows:
James Murdoch, Fred Brown, Anita Albert and Jodi Powell 18 defeated Susan Swift, Anne Smith, Roslyn Lewis and Greg Keyte 15.
Cliff Morton, Faye Cook, Barry Martin and Graham Albert 22 defeated Neville McPherson, Wendy Robb, James Ward and Roseanne Prentice 13.
Loris Lochhead, Wayne Dowsey, Carman Mangan and Jan Martin 24 defeated Peter Mills, Julie Holmquest, Justin Robb and Robyn Fierenzi 9.
Ladder Position: 5.
Division B3 – Club Mulwala 95 (14) defeated Bright 24 (0)
A very good win by a side that is entered into the competition for the first time this year. They are travelling extremely well, and we must acknowledge the bowlers from Yarrawonga who assisted us in filling positions as subs for this week.
Speaking to some of them they were very happy to be able to have a game and, of course, we were very appreciative of their support.
A special mention must go to Sam Smith, Bob Keats, Val Kennedy (sub-Yarra) and Michael Dickson (sub-Yarra) for their great win of 43/2.
Not to gloat, however good team win should be acknowledged.
Results as follows:
Joan Connor, Nola Mongor, Doug Chessum and Richard Smith (sub-Yarra) 27 defeated Kenneth Lewis, Bill Connelly, (sub) and Terry Thompson 14.
Frank Exton, Ray Tovey, Laurie Leary and Russell Cook 25 defeated Otto Kupferle Linda Vanderwert, (sub) and (sub) 8.
Sam Smith, Val Kennedy (sub-Yarra), Michael Dickson (sub-Yarra) and Bob Keats 43 defeated Geoff Setford, James Davis, (sub) and Phyllis Swindley 2.
