Tungamah Bowls Club

2024/25 season - is up and running, not very fast for the club unfortunately, as they had very little success.
Many players were unavailable for either work, weddings or not in bowls mode yet.
Both teams competed strongly for undermanned sides and are to be commended.
B1s were at home to old foes St James who were victorious this round by just 5 shots, Tungamah got 2 points for one rink so their climb up the ladder has started.
A3s had a slow arduous trip to Beechworth. It seems each time Tunga make this trip something different occurs.
Last year, driving through floodwaters over the seven bridges only to find a road closed sign when they emerged at the other end.
Needless to say the group came home a different route. A kangaroo caught in a fence on another trip where Wokka and Allan gave it it’s freedom.
This trip was a sloooowww bus, the crew wondered on the hills if they would be needed to push or if Muz had left the hand brake on or had his thong stuck under the accelerator.
Beechworth were concerned as it was almost one o’clock by the time the Tunga crew arrived even though they ahd left at 11.20am.
Always an enjoyable competitive match, even though they have the best of Tunga and this trip was no exception.
Tungamah went down by 20 shots but came away with three hard earned points.
Afternoon tea was terrific as Beechworth provided heaps of sandwiches which were appreciated as a change from savoys, cheese and cabana.
Great to see so many familiar faces at training last Thursday, both on the green and on the sidelines enjoying a BBQ and social catch up.
Members draw commences tomorrow, remember you must be there to claim.
More news on the monster raffle next week.
Good bowling to all clubs this season and Tungamah looks forward to reacquainting with all players in their divisions.
Hopefully the club see some absent bowlers at practice as there are some hard games coming up.
Yarrawonga Bowls
And we’re off! The season commenced on a day of sunshine and high spirits; unfortunately, not with the bang we were hoping for; however, it is only first round and there is a lot of changes within the teams.
A1s hosted Myrtleford at home going down 67/85 with all rinks going down.
A4s were away at Rutherglen, only just going down by 3 shots in a gallant effort 76/79.
P Markby’s rink had a resounding win 21/13; P Dodmans crew also winners 22/19 and a draw by the rink skipped by K Allender means Yarra Bowls were quite unfortunate to go down with a loss in only the one rink.
B1 and B2s both travelled to Moira and suffered 2 heavy defeats ... only the rink of R Butler in the B2s claiming a win 22/16. B1’s 48/80 - B2’s down 52/79.
Let’s bounce back in round 2 and good luck to the midweek teams who are looking quite strong this preseason.
Over 60s have started the season well with Monday at Wangaratta for the Roy Black Day producing good overall results.
Team skipped by K Allander had 2 wins and a loss and the R Wickham lead rink had 2 draws and a loss.
Thursday saw the teams travel to North Albury with M. Crawford’s team having 2 wins and a loss and S Maddox’s team also 2 wins and a loss so a good week all round. Keep up the great start guys!
Training and pie night on Friday, October 11 with 72 players and members attending a fun and very happy hour.
Coach Mick Szabo gave a great season opening speech and has requested all pennant players to attend training, even for 15 minutes or so where possible.
Mondays 2/4/2 saw 40 players compete with the team of Ian Woods and Kevin Evans claiming first place, always winners in Yarra Bowls.
Runners up were Bev Norwood and Peter Humphrey’s - Jackpot was not claimed.
Wed was the first intra club 2 bowl triples. What a great fun day this is, and was welcomed back with gusto, many commenting that it was great to see old friends from the bowls community and it was certainly contested with great enthusiasm.
Even some skill on occasion! 54 players took to the greens and the win of $300 went to the YMGCR combo of Ray Irvine, G Presnell and Greg Green. Well bowled gents.
Second place were the ever-menacing crew (aka menaces) from Wangaratta consisting of T.Selwood, G McDonald and G Brayden. Third placed team of J Flannery, C Langton and W Saunders.
Please support Wangaratta at their next event. We can’t keep these events going if the bowls community don’t support it with numbers.
Best game winners - 1st game - R Hermassoo, 2nd game - G Murmansk, 3rd game - M Szabo and 4th game - W Lowrie.
Sunday was the final of the Men’s 21 up Championship between Mick Szabo and Gary Sanders, what a fitting final.
After an epic contest at 20/20 the very last bowl saw Gary Sanders crowned victor.
Well done Gary and well played Zarbs.
Good bowling and good health to all.

Pennant Training - Training is held each Thursday from 2pm. All pennant players are urged to attend. This is a great opportunity to seek advice and refine your bowling skills.
The selection committee are very pleased to see so many players at Pennant training each week.
Saturday morning competition - During the pennant season a bowls game will be held each Saturday morning from 9.30am.
This will ensure every player who has made the commitment to playing in the pennant season will get a game every week.
Geoff Mitchell, the clubs coach, will be running the Saturday morning matches. The game is held at the Club Mulwala greens.
The competition is also ideal for bowlers who do not want to travel to play or do not like playing bowls on a hot Saturday afternoon.
Winning players take home Club Mulwala vouchers and cash. The matches will be a great opportunity for the clubs’ players to increase their skills and hopefully impress the selection committee.
Please have your name on the players list by Friday afternoon to ensure a game.
The first week’s competition was a great success.
Coach Geoff Mitchell was very impressed with how many bowlers took up the opportunity to play.
Social news - Oak’s Day at Club Mulwala. The club has arranged a table for bowls members for the Oaks Day event.
Please put your name on the list to attend ASAP.

YMGCR Bowls
Wednesday Social Bowls
Last Wednesday’s edition of Social Bowls saw 28 players enjoying the day across both greens.
The greens are running well under the new greenkeeping regime and should continue to present well for the new pennant season.
Back to the bowls; the winners on the day were Neville Coleman (S), and Robyn Forge (L), who took home a drink card each and the first prize of $120.
The runners up prize went to the combo of Danny Mc Neill (S), and Bob Constantine (L), who shared the $60 prize money.
The first Lucky Number prize of $20 went to Norm Windebank, and the second Lucky Number prize of $10 was won by a visitor, Polly.
Wednesday Social Bowls will be continuing through the pennant season, so remember to enter your teams on the names list on the bowls office noticeboard.
Single entries and visitors are welcome, although single entries, and visitors are reminded to include their contact telephone numbers when entering their names.
Opening Day
Opening day was held last Sunday, October 6. There were 50 attendees and 42 of those enjoyed the game of social bowls that was held after the Opening Ceremony.
This saw last season’s ladies champion, Laureen Smith play the first bowl of the new season, a season which is hopefully full of promise for YMGCR.
Terry Baxter won the novelty game where the closest bowl to the spider won the prize. This was followed by 3 games of 6 ends of social bowls.
After the games were completed, everyone made their way to the Willow Room for drinks and snack platters.
Thanks go out to YMGCR who sponsored the drinks. The bowls club are also appreciative of the contribution to the day made by Manto’s Produce, Thurston and Howell, Chapel St.
Thanks also go out to the YMGCR Bowls Social Committee, whose hard work ensured that the day was a great success.
Weekend Pennant
Last weekend saw the resumption of weekend pennant for the new 2024 / 2025 season. And by and large it was a successful weekend for YMGCR.
The A1s undertook the long journey to Kiewa and came away losing with honour going down by 10 shots overall.
The final score saw Kiewa 76 shots, and 16 points defeat YMGCR 66 shots, and 2 points. Winning well for the visitors was the rink of Rhonda Irvine (L), Shirley Hummel (2), Greg Green and Julian Jones (S), who secured 2 invaluable points, winning 24 shots to Kiewa 15 shots.
The A1s are in 5th place on the ladder and next week play host to Yarrawonga in what should be an exciting and perhaps season defining match.
The A3s played host to Mansfield and after the 84th end was completed came away with a solid 87 shot and 16-point win to Mansfield’s 76 shots and 2 points.
Winning with a degree of style for YMGCR was the rink of Doug Wheeler (L), Greg Fisher (2), Liliana Borwick (3), and Danny McNeill (S), who beat their opponents 21 shots to 14 shots.
YMGCR find themselves on top of the ladder and next week venture to Swanpool.
The A5s enjoyed the home green at YMGCR where they accounted for Milawa 67 shots and 12 points to Milawa’s 52 shots and 2 points.
Winning well for YMGCR was the rink of Robyn Forge (L), Judy Leeson (2), Les Balfour (3), and Ron Lamson (S), who beat their opponents 28 shots to 14 shots.
The A5s are in second place on the table and next week sail into uncharted waters when they travel to Commercial Club in Albury, who have this year debuted in the Ovens and Murray Region.
Until next week, good bowling.
