Tungamah have won their way into another Preliminary Final with a hard-fought victory over a gallant Jerilderie at Katamatite on Sunday.
The players were greeted with another fast deck and just about perfect conditions for footy. Tungamah kicked with the breeze in the first term and started well.
They kicked the only 3 goals for the term, holding an 18-point lead at the first change. The second term was a real battle of wills with both sides applying plenty of pressure.
It certainly wasn’t a great spectacle with the Bears managing 1 goal 5 behinds for the quarter and the Demons 2 goals 7 behinds.
This left Tungamah holding a 10-point lead at the main break.
Tungamah put on the burners in the third term as their midfield gained some ascendancy and their ball movement clicked into gear.
They looked a totally different team as they piled on 6 goals to 1 for the quarter to open up what was a match winning break.
Jerilderie kept coming in the last term and pulled the margin back under 2 goals with 5 minutes to go. However, goals to Wilson and Saunders in quick succession sealed the game and another Preliminary Final berth next week.
Jerilderie will rue their inaccuracy in front of goal kicking 7 goals 22 to Tungamah’s 12 goals 11.
The Bears were best served by Terrence Jones, Brad Wilson, Sean Johns and Cam Carling through the midfield.
Sam Ferguson and Jye Holcombe were again very solid in defence, while up forward Ash Saunders bagged 4 majors.
Tungamah now travels to Deniliquin Rovers next Saturday to take on the reigning premiers Waaia for a spot in the Grand Final.
Waaia were comfortable winners last time the sides met at Tungamah, however the wide expanses of Memorial Park will provide a different challenge for both sides and the Bears are looking forward to it.
Reserves
Tungamah 8.8.56 defeated Rennie 2.5.17.
Picking a team this week kind of resembled the scribe organising his finances by just placing the few coins he has in order.
But with the trainers working more miracles than Jesus Christ himself the ressies managed to resurrect a team.
Rangi was, not surprisingly, instrumental proving that even at 60%, he’s 20% better than most! It would be good if Ning listened to the advice he’s giving everyone and give the easy hands himself, as he burned players worse than a red head holidaying in the tropics.
With repetitive calls for Saunders to give the ball a bit more air on his kicks, Jezza quickly changed his tune as he was sent to camp under one with opponents closing in faster than a claustrophobic’s basement walls.
Eyes were on Gambi after another physics defying inside out torpedo.
Bozz was made aware that the Henderson express wasn’t stopping at stations and didn’t care if it was an opposition or teammate on the tracks.
Patches demonstrated why he never bothered to learn to handball slotting 4 majors citing Hendo not telling him to get out of his space as the reason for the scoreboard onslaught.
Despite his addresses to the playing group stating quite the opposite, Gambi’s mouth was bigger than Mr Ed’s early as he gave the goal umpire a bit of an ear massage just seconds before tucking the ball under arm and running head on into 3 opponents giving the goal umpire the satisfaction of throwing up the double fingers with a fair grin.
Goals: M. Bourke 4, W. Sharp, T. Hayes, C. Bozzola, D. Clarke
Best: T. Hayes, J. Saunders, S. Kellock, M. Bourke, D. Clarke, H. Thomson.
Thirds
Tungamah 10.14.74 defeated Strathmerton 11.0.66.
The Bears took on the Bulldogs for a spot in the preliminary final. From the first bounce the game was fast and furious with neither side taking a backward step.
Again, the backline held strong with Mick Hughes marking strongly and running the ball out of defence. Jackson Houston taking many intercept marks in his best game for the season.
Damo Walker and Tom Coffey battled hard in the ruck giving the Bears first use of the ball.
Jayden Arnold and Xander Smith ran hard all day and drove the ball into the forward line creating many scoring opportunities.
Malique Beer and Jake Walker kicked 2 goals each which allowed the Bears to come away with a hard fought 8-point win in a game where the lead changed many times.
A fantastic team effort which should carry into this week’s game.
Goals: Malique Beer 2, Jake Walker 2, Jayden Arnold 1, Tom Coffey 1, Brae Grant 1, Lenny Lonergan 1, Jaxon Raven 1, Lach Wren 1.
Best: Jaxon Raven, Jayden Arnold, Malique Beer, Xander Smith, Brae Grant, Jackson Houston.
Fourths
Tungamah 2.9.21 defeated by Berrigan 5.2.32.
The young Bears showed great determination and resilience in their semi-final against Berrigan at Waaia.
While the result may not have been in their favour, it is important to acknowledge the team’s efforts and recognize that on another day, the outcome could have been different.
The kids gave their all and represented the team with pride. They should hold their heads high, knowing that they left everything on the field.
Watching each player grow and improve throughout the season has been a joy, and their progress is something to be celebrated. As the season comes to a close, it is important for everyone involved to reflect on the valuable lessons learned.
Each game has provided the opportunities for growth on and off the field.
The coaches hope that each child takes away something meaningful from this experience, whether it be resilience, teamwork, or simply the love of the game.
A win or loss, offers an opportunity for growth and development.
Let’s take these learnings and carry them forward, continuing to support and encourage one another.
Goals: S. Kirchen and B. Doyle.
Best: S. Bainikoro, J. Bamford, L. Wren, X. Chessells, G. Richmond, L. O’Brien.
NETBALL
B Grade
Tungamah 25 defeated by Strathmerton 52.
In fine conditions at Katty on Sunday the B grade girls came up against strong a Strathmerton team.
This game has ended what has been a great season by all. The B Grade had some strong passages of play, in particular Carly on the duck pass. She even kept herself guessing on what she would do next.
The Bears threw everything at the Strathy girls, but they just proved to be a much better side on the day.
Credit to all of the Tungamah girls for getting far and not dropping heads on a tough day at the office.
C Grade
Tungamah 47 defeated by Berrigan 50.
It was a lovely day to be watching netball on Saturday but quite hot on the court. The team started in fantastic spirits celebrating 2 girls.
It was Amber Peachey’s 100th game and Co-Captain Grace Whitlock’s 21st. The team were determined to bring home the win, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
The girls on the court got off to a wonderful start even though they had changed the game plan as to how the team normally play as the coaches knew to have a chance they had to force the very experienced Berrigan to make mistakes.
The attacking team of Adelle, Haylea and Di, came out firing on all cylinders and made short work of the scoreboard, with Bernadette in C backing them up at every opportunity.
The girls in defence were led by the birthday girl and Captain Grace in GK who worked tirelessly to shut down a very experienced GS. Hannah in GD kept niggling away at the Berrigan shooters to wear them down by gaining many rebounds and turning the ball over before the shooters could get the ball in the ring.
Amber played WD beautifully shutting down the WA and not allowing her the opportunity of the ball as much as possible causing those very needed mistakes. The girls on the bench Sophie, Brooke, Danielle and coach Mellissa were full of support and celebrating the girls for every turnover and beautiful play their teammates made.
The girls were up at half time but the heat on the court was starting to wear some of the midcourt so with a little change of Adelle into c and Lauren into WA gave the team a welcome change of fresh legs and new prospective.
At 3 quarter time Tunga were up by 6 but hot. A change back to the original starting team came with hope the girls could hold on for 1 more quarter. Berrigan looked tired but had changes in the last quarter which gave the game a new level.
Berrigan found third gear and as much as the Tunga girls tried, they just could no longer keep the very experienced Berrigan side shut down in the end going down by 3 goals.
Every one of the c grade girls should be very proud of themselves. Not once did any of the girls drop their heads, everyone encouraged and supported each other which is fantastic considering they had not played together as a whole team until the first final.
Thank you to all of the C Grade team for your commitment, your drive, support and fun for a wonderful season.
Congratulations and good luck to Berrigan for the rest of your final’s journey.
