The Redeyes were able to fight back with strong performances from Jack Charlton, Mason Coote and Ari Glover as a collective.
Unfortunately, despite peppering the goals in the last quarter, we couldn’t quite get over the line and had another heartbreaking loss - this time by one point.
We feel as though we were improving each week but would love to have some reward for effort.
Final score: Blighty 8.12 (60) def by Picola United 9.7 (61).
Reserves
The Reserves produced a strong opening on Saturday, taking early control through the midfield with Rusty Milward and Billy Lawes leading the way.
Their work at the stoppages gave the side first use, allowing Alex O’Brien and Jack Jennings to hit the scoreboard and get the team off to a promising start.
Nash Suckling and Josh Wawrzycki were consistent contributors around the ground, applying pressure and helping lock the ball inside the forward 50 with repeat efforts.
On the wing, Ben Crossley provided important run and carry, taking the game on to create scoring opportunities while also working hard defensively to impact during quick turnovers.
In defence, Danyon Williams, Nick Taylor and Jason Wawrzycki worked tirelessly to hold up the Picola attack, ensuring their forwards had to earn every possession and limiting scoring opportunities across the first three quarters.
Despite the solid effort, the final quarter proved challenging.
With the advantage of the breeze, Picola were able to shift momentum and capitalise on their opportunities, running out winners by 47 points.
Final score: Blighty 2.4 (16) def by Picola United 9.9 (63).
Thirds
A strong team performance saw the thirds secure a well-earned win, built on relentless pressure and commitment across the ground.
From the first whistle, the intensity was evident, with players eager to win possession and keep the ball moving.
The desire to be involved stood out, as everyone presented as an option and backed each other up.
Most importantly, it was a true team effort, unselfish play, clear communication, and support at every contest made the difference.
It was really hard to pick best on, but Charlie Hetherington took that out followed by Charlie Rennie then Jake Harvey, Mark Godfrey, Zach Grimison and Jackson Cleve got the good sport award
Final score: Blighty 14.6 (90) def Picola United 1.6 (12).
Fourths
Picola made the most of the wind advantage in the first quarter, which set them up for the game.
But Blighty was able to hold them for the rest of the game, and is continuing to work well as a team.
Deakin Kelly and Amaya Morgan are working well in the back line together.
This week’s best on ground award went to Andrew Frost, who has a fantastic work ethic. Playing as the ruck rover, he never stops and is a great team member.
Daniel Burn is another hardworking team member, and Harlem Morgan was able to find her form and was able to start winning the ball.
Maddy Hunter played her second game for the fourths, and really is starting to find her spot in the team.
Felix McKenzie came up from the fifths. He shows no fear when he is playing up in the next level.
The good sports award went to Deagan Morgan, who always plays the game in a fair manner.
Final score: Blighty 2.5 (17) def by Picola United 4.11 (35).
Fifths
After playing in warm conditions for our first few games, we encountered a cold windy morning which our team will have to get used to going forward.
Our first quarter started off in great shape, working together scoring a couple of goals.
But to Picola’s credit, they started using the ball well in the open space, which is something we are trying to work on.
We will continue to work hard on the track, working on our skills and gameplay.
Final score: Not scored.
Awards: Felix, Bill, Ari , Nash, Kayden and Amber.
