ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls

Another successful Social Sets Play ‘Tournament’ was held over a longer than expected period.

The social game, held ‘in-house’ because of COVID restrictions, was enjoyed by all who participated and playing under the new lights was particularly pleasing.

Club President Graeme Arnold thanked the ClubMulwala Board of Directors and in particular the Club Mulwala CEO Mr Alan Rowe for their foresight in providing the lights for the Outdoor Bowls.

This is proving to be a very popular twilight activity with the bowlers and is another reason for the increased bowling membership this year.

Prize money was well received with over with $560.00 in prizes and prize money given away for the three week tournament.

Winners of week 3 were Graeme Arnold and Gary Parker with 12 points, plus 31 shots just pipping Daryl Dighton and Peter Humphreys with 12 points, plus 28 shots and Kerry Merrett and Stephen McPhee with 12 points, plus 21 shots.

Overall top six place getters were:

1st Place - Daryl Dighton and Peter Humphreys with 32 points, 72 shots.

2nd Place – Graeme Arnold and Gary Parker with 30 points, 63 shots.

3rd Place – Mick Millsom and Loris Lochhead with 30 points, 56 shots.

4th Place – Kerry Merrett and Stephen McPhee with 26 points, 58 shots.

5th Place – Barry Pitt and Anita Albert with 26 points, 42 shots.

6th Place – Mark Smith and Jodi Powell with 18 shots, 48 points.

Wade and Nicole McPherson were presented with ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls Cloths. Wade played pennant for the club for the first time last year and was a member of the successful Ovens and Murray B1 Championship team.

Not bad for your first year in competition bowls. Nicole who is very new to the game is ‘hooked’ and liking her bowls more and more each time she is able to get on the greens. This twilight game enabled them to team up and participate and, although never winning a game were extremely excited when they scored and end from the more experienced teams. One thing for sure their enthusiasm never abated.

Congratulations to all winners and participants and a special thankyou to the Greens Keeper Gary Parker for the professional manner in which the greens were presented (and continue to be).

Tuesday, November 16 – Midweek Pennant round 1

Division A1 – YMGCR 81 defeated Club Mulwala 41.

After the disappointment on the cancellation of the proposed start of the O&M Weekend Pennant season the club were looking forward to getting the midweek season underway.  Playing YMGCR on their turf was always going to be a challenge and that is exactly how it turned out to be.

Two of the rinks started out very well however the opposition proved too good and were worthy winners on the day.

Results were as follows:

Mick Millsom, Mark Smith, Malcolm Miller and Kim Lefevre 15 lost to Leslie Spencer, Michael Szabo, Robyn Moore and Laureen Smith 24.

Peter Humphreys, Daryl Dighton, Kerry Merrett and Stephen McPhee 10 lost to Garry Sanders, Greg Green, Sue Middleton and Claire Sanders 33.

Kay Smith, Graeme Arnold, Liz Murdoch and Jan Martin 16 lost to Anne Miles, Gary Presnell, Wayne Lowrie, and Michael Vaughan 24.

Ladder Position – 8.

Division B1 – Swanpool 56 Defeated By Club Mulwala 64

A good opening win against Swanpool on a green described as difficult by a number of the players. It was terrific to see Graham Albert back in competition after a long absence.

Results were as follows:

Cliff Morton, Barry Martin, Graham Albert and Russell Cook 23 defeated Remo Ascenzo, Judy Barber, Robert Mathieson and Rosie Daws 14.

Loris Lochhead, Eugene Hodson, Betty Richmond and Jan Morton 20 defeated Sarah Mathieson, Margaret Blake, Christine Armstrong and Gordon Renkin 13.

Barry Pitt, Daryl Richmond, Anita Albert and Wade McPherson 21 lost to Harry Barber, Jennifer Sievwright, Michael Turner and De Sales Turner 29.

Ladder Position – 1.

Division B2 – Club Mulwala 54 lost to Corryong 61

The new side entered in the competition has a number of new players and some who have not played for a number of years. This side has potential and will improve as the season progresses.

Games against Corryong are played at Wodonga and some found it hard to pick up the green.

With two rinks up and one down and a loss overall some will be disappointed however this can be used as motivation for the rest of the season.

Results were as follows:

Doug Chessum, Fred Brown, Carmen Mangan and Brian Pearson 23 defeated Catherine Ross, Linda Carson, Merrilyn Whitsed and Cheryl E. Smedley 12.

Joan Connor, Ray Tovey, Bev Norwood and Nicole McPherson 8 lost to Joy Towers, Melissa Humphrey, Peter Towers and Patricia Sheather 32.

Wayne Dowsey, Faye Cook, Nola Mongor and Pam Lefevre 23 defeated Cheryl C. Smedley, Janet Spurgeon, Stewart Ross and llma Clarke 17.

Ladder Position – 4.

YMGCR Bowls

Pennant didn’t go to plan this weekend with all 4 sides going down. The A1 played last year’s runner up side in Wangaratta at home and went down 4/79 to 14/85.

The star’s for YMGCR was Les Spencer’s rink winning 29/9 with Les bowling out of his skin and getting great support from two of the young recruits in Stuart McNeill and Ryan Davies and with Claire Sanders dominating up front they nearly got YMGCR over the line.

Jimmy Lefevre’s rink had a solid win 24/19 and with another new player to the side in Ken Widdison giving his team a great start. Szab’s rink was in a tight battle all day but lost the last couple of ends to go down 14/26, Scott Widdison went down 12/31.

A2’s travelled to Mansfield and YMGCR were expecting a tough game as they are always a hard side to beat, BUT what the club dished up was very disappointing display going down 0/49 to 18/118.

Best rink was Ray Brown who lost 16/21, Robbie Lidgerwood lost 11/26, Kerry Kinnane lost 12/33 and Cat lost 10/38. Let’s hope they can bounce back next week and have a better showing.

A4’s played Tungamah at home and lost 2/66 to 16/89. Best rink was Ian Morffew’s side winning 23/20, Marie Whitehead had a battle with the green keeper Wazza Henderson just going down 13/19. Ian Price went down 15/25 and Bob Evens lost 13/25.

B2’s travelled to Chiltern and lost 0/34 to 14/71. Best rink was Keith Eade who lost 14/20, Terry Mathews lost 12/28 and Bill Butterworth went down 8/23.

Midweek Pennant sides had a far better start to the season with the A1’s having a good win against neighbors in ClubMulwala winning 14/81 to 0/41.

After a slow start they powered home to have a comfortable win. Best rink was skipped by Garry Sanders winning 33/1. The other new skip in Les Spencer had a good victory winning 24/15 and the ever reliable skip in Anne Miles just keeps on notching up victories winning 24/16.

Next week they travel to Corowa RSL.

A2’s played Wodonga at home and got all rinks up winning 14/70 to 0/51. Best rink was the new skipper Stuart McNeill winning 24/17, Marcia McGrillen won 22/16 and Ray Brown 24/18. They will travel to Yackandandah in what will be a hard game.

A3’s played Wodonga at Wodonga and in a very tight game just going down 2/55 to 12/57. Best rink was Les Balfour team having a great win 27/10, Danny McNeill lost 11/23 and Marie Whitehead going down 17/24, they play Rutherglen at home next week.

B2’s played Corowa Civic away and in another tight game just going down by 2 shots losing 2/57 to 12/59. Greg Fishers rink had a good win 21/18, Mary Essex lost 17/18 and John Wenzel lost 19/23.

Wednesday social bowls had 36 players with 4 two game winners and with a score of +24 the winners were Rob Hummel and Shagga Baxter.

Runners up were Cat and Shirly Potter with a +20. The jackpot did not get claimed and the lucky numbers were won by Chris Page and Col Withers.

Friday Social bowls had another full field, and the winners were the husband and wife team in Gavin and Lil Borwick.

Runners up were another husband-and-wife combo in Garry and Claire Sanders. The consolation prizes went to Noel Millar and Hans Lang and another husband-and-wife team in Les and Robyn Balfour.

On Sunday there were 3 men’s teams in the State Triples playing at Corowa Civic and in good news the team of Scott Widdison, Ryan Davies and Gary Presnell have progressed to the semifinals.

They will play a team from Moira, the game will start at 9.30 at Corowa Civic and if they get through the will contest the final later in the afternoon.

The other teams were Jim and Andy Lefevre and Garry Sanders who were in the same section as Scott Widdison. Their game came down the last bowl with Scott picking up a 2 to claim the win.

Ian Price, Doddy Dodman and Norm Winderbank were the third team and they all played some very good bowls.

In the ladies section, the YMGCR team of Anne Miles, Laureen Smith and Claire Sanders have once again got through, they will play a team from Myrtleford and the winners will play the team of Kerri Leask (Benalla) and YMGCR’s own Robyn Moore and Sue Middleton, this team has the bye.

So, if Anne wins the club will have 5 out of the 6 ladies in the final. The first final will begin at 9.30 at Corowa RSL. So if you want to watch some high quality bowls, get along to Corowa to support your teammates.
