Final – Graham Albert 21 defeated Daryl Richmond 11.

Congratulations to both Graham and Daryl on making the final. Graham in particular, with this being his first year using the bowling arm after many months of illness.

It is great to see him back playing the sport he loves and coming away with the 21 Up Championship for 2020/2021.

Social Bowls

On Thursday, April 15 round 1 of the Social Bowls Sets Play was held, something that the club had not run before and the experiment proved very successful with thirty bowlers on the green.

This was wonderfully supported by the members and a team from Border Golf and all who participated enjoyed the day tremendously.

This week was the first round of four so there is still a long way to go before a final result will be known.

There were two teams who came away with maximum scores of 12 points and had to be separated by shots up.

Runners up were Jan Corboy, John Thurling and Jack Jardin with 12 points plus 13 shots up and the eventual winners being Don Ellis, Andy Lefevre and Gary Creswell with 12 points plus 17 shots up.

You may be wondering why so many shots up with just 3 X sets of 5 ends, well the 3rd end of each set was a Power Play with double points awarded for each shot gained.

Congratulations to the winners and we will see you all next week for Round 2.

Coming Up

Thursday, April 22 – Round 2 of the Social Bowls Sets Play commencing at 1.20pm.

Saturday, April 24 – The club are so looking forward to the ANZAC Day Tournament. It will be an honour to play in memory of those who have served and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country in all wars. They are truly our heroes. LEST WE FORGET.

YMGCR Bowls

Wednesday Social Bowls had 28 players with visitors from Mt Martha and of all places SCOTLAND… but the international visitor got Keith Eade, so he was pushing up hill from the start.  There was only 2 two game winners and the runners up with a VERY good score of +19 were “GG” Green and the latest stick phenomenon in Billy “The Stick Man” Jenkins.

Just want to say, these arms are great for the game and has kept a lot of bowls who the club would have lost, still playing…. I (the scribe) know there are people who call them cheating sticks, BUT!!!  Who cares, if it gets people with injuries back out on the greens, bowls is the winner.

Now we get to the winners and with long layoff from social bowls …. Rory Brown got lucky and drew the old champ in Dougie “Boy” McTier and they got the chocolates with a +25.

During the week 2 club mates represent the O&M in the Bowls Victoria State Championships; Anne Miles played in both the Ladies Singles and Ladies Pairs over 60’s (I’m not sure but I think it was her first time in the over 60’s category….only joking) unfortunately her and her partner Yarrawonga’s Caroline Reilly bombed out in the first round and in the singles she had a convincing win in her first round and then going out in the second round after a brave showing.

In better news Garry “Wally” Sanders got all the way to the final and just failed, wow what a fantastic performance from the multiple singles champ, it just goes to show what talent the bowls club has.

The club wants to promote more Social bowls, so they are going to try a “Super “Sunday game on Anzac Day, April 25 starting at 1pm.

Dress will be mufti and the club will be playing 3 games of 12 ends, the game will be 3 bowl pairs, entry fee will be $20 a team.

So, if you are interested, please put your name down on the list at the bowls club or contact Garry Pressnell (0408 143 057) or Ray Brown (0407 437 046).

The AGM will be held on Monday, May 31 at 7pm in the Willow Room at the golf club, nomination forms are already out and must be in by May 13 by 5pm.

Let’s get as many nominations as possible in for all positions so we can get the best people available.

This week was Terry “Shagga” Baxter’s birthday, I (the scribe) thought it was his 80th but Lyn has informed me that he is only his 70th …I’m certainly not going to question her BUT!!!!! (he must have had a very, very, very hard life).

Also it will be one of the clubs favorite ladies 90th birthday in Myra Nowell on the 21st, I hope young “Benny Boy” is going to take her out and spoil her rotten, have a nice day and may there be many more to come.

As from Thursday, April 22 and starting at 10am there will be a weekly social roll up, there will be no sheet, so the format each week will depend on the numbers.

So, if you would like to come along for a relaxed fun morning of bowls and then you can later have a coffee and a chinwag (of course this will depend on the weather).
