Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club will host their Club Championships over the weekend. These events are always hotly contested events, and it is anticipated that there will be some outstanding tennis played.

Saturday morning will have the junior events played. The age groups will be 10/U, 12/U, 14/U and 16/U for both boys and girls.
Each player who competes in matches will be entered in two different age groups. All matches will be singles and a knockout format.
With nearly 100 players playing most events will be required to be completed beyond Saturday morning. Players will be entered to confirm if they are competing.
Sunday will see a host of events with the Open Singles, 18/U Singles and 35+ Singles for both men and ladies.
There will also be gender-based doubles. To compete in these events please arrive prior to 9am and also if possible, let Grant Lewis know you are intending to play.
It is hoped that as many members as possible will play over the weekend.
Country Week Tennis
Last week a contingent of Yarrawonga’s players participated in Country Week in Wodonga. This is a terrific week of tennis with players competing in one of the 12 mens divisions and 16 ladies divisions. With around 8 teams in each division the scale of the event is simply unbelievable.
There are 1320 players in 220 teams playing on 101 courts. More importantly the social activities are paramount to the week, and these are certainly enjoyed.
John Brunner and Jack Bassett representing Brunner’s Babies finished fourth and Grant Chappell in the Hume Hornets finished sixth in Section 1.
Mike Lairson was part of Wangaratta Red finished fifth in Section 6.
Yarrawonga Allsorts consisting of Gert Brunner, Sandra Banks, Angela Mitchell, Christine Turbull, Ellen Bruce, Anna Castles and Amy Lairson had a great week and finished fourth in Section 7. Likewise the Bloomers finished fourth in their Section 14 with the team comprising of Jenelle Bennett, Win Win Htwe, Coral Barnard, Georgie Bruce, Helen White and Jan Knights.

Saturday Junior Tennis
Saturday morning again saw the courts totally filled with kids having a great time playing tennis. With a few coaches away it was great to see some parents jumping in to assist where required.
The Hot Shots and coaching groups continue to develop at a rapid rate. It is fantastic to see the improvement of all players.
This bodes well for the future of both the junior program but more importantly the club.
On Saturday the club temporarily farewelled two long-term coaches Jack Bassett and Fraser Bennett who for various positive reasons are not coaching again this season. Best wishes and thank you for their efforts over many years.
Players in matches have improved substantially with extremely long rallies.
As a result matches went longer than normal. Group winners were Braeden Coates, Tom Hemphill, Poppy Robinson, Lily Leslie, Alice Withers, Flynn Cox and Tom Conway.
Premier League
The second week of the season of Premier League was played on Saturday. This competition involves 48 of the older kids competing in four teams. Each players completes a singles, doubles and mixed doubles each morning.
The team that wins the most set is declared the winner in each rubber. Thanks to the players who filled in to ensure the day ran smoothly.
In the first rubber Sabalenka took on Sinner. There were a lot of very even matches before Sabalenka was able to sneak away towards the end of the morning to win 16 sets to 8. For Sabalenka Noah Cox, Finn Angwin, Liam Mansfield and Taylah Chessells all won three sets.
The second rubber was as a tight contest with close matches all day. At the end of the day Medvedev won 14 sets to Zheng’s 10.
For Medvedev Olivia Lewis, Natalie Linehan and Annabelle Buerckner won all of their matches and for Zheng Ernie Buerckner was undefeated.
After round 2 the ladder is Sabalenka 34, Medvedev 32, Zheng 29, Sinner 17.
Wilby Tennis
The final round of the Wilby and District Tennis Association was completed over the weekend. The season has been great fun and it is terrific to see the combination of families that create each of the teams.
On the weekend Mulwala Gold were unable to field a team and this meant Wilby took the 8 points and leapfrogged into the top 4. Due to the heat Savernake and Burramine shared the points.
The much-anticipated Battle of the Boosey Creek took place on Friday night between Tungamah Gold and Tungamah Green.
Green started off in great form in the mens section with Josh Buerckner, Tom Wren, Harry Wren and Lachie Wren winning their sets. In the ladies Gold fought back to win 4 sets to 2 with Danielle Lawrence best on court winning all of her matches.
The mixed was shared 2 sets apiece with Green winning by 2 games. Overall Tungamah Green won on games to claim the points 6 to 2 on a fantastic night of tennis.
Mulwala Maroon hosted Telford with the teams at the two extremes of the ladder. The tennis on the night certainly didn’t show this with many very close sets.
Telford won the mens 5 sets to 1 on the back of Andrew Brew and Andrew Banks being undefeated. Mulwala bounced back in the ladies to win 4 sets to 2. Sheryl McBurnie was the star of the night winning all of her sets.
The mixed was shared 2 sets each with Telford sneaking home by 3 games. Overall Telford won the night 6 points to 2. Well done to both teams.
At the conclusion of the home and away season the ladder is Telford 68, Savernake 65, Wilby 54, Burramine 53, Tungamah Gold 50, Tungamah Green 45, Mulwala Gold 28, Mulwala Maroon 21.
This week the finals will commence. In A Grade it is Telford vs Burramine and Savernake vs Wilby.
In B Grade the matches are Tungamah Gold vs Mulwala Maroon and Tungamah Green vs Mulwala Gold.
The winners of these matches will play in the Grand Finals on Friday March 1 at the Yarrawonga courts.
Thursday ladies
Last week there was a general bye with many ladies participating in Country Week. Round 3 will resume this week and it is certain the ladies will be in great form.
The ladder after round 2 is Slazenger 12, Yonex 11, Dunlop 9, Technifibre 9, Head 8, Wilson 6, Babolat 5, Prince 0.
Tuesday mens
Round 11 of the mens competition was cancelled due to extreme hot weather and impending storms.
Organiser Ash Wheaton was right on the mark as the weather turned very nasty right on cue. Current ladder is Head 61, Maxwell 56, Warner 50, Labuschagne 50, Hazelwood 47, Starc 46, Marsh 45, Cummins 37, Stoinis 37, Zampa 30 and Inglis 25.
Goulburn Murray Tennis
Numurkah played Shepparton in Division 1 of Goulburn Murray Tennis. Ellen Bruce was in great form to win her singles and doubles.
John Brunner had a tough day at the office with many close matches, but he couldn’t sneak a win. Shepparton home 7 sets to 5.
In Division 2 the top two sides Cobram and Tatura battled it out. It was a great afternoon of tennis with the sets split 5 all with Cobram winning on games 62 to 56. Daryl Bennett was a major contributor to their success winning each of his 3 sets.
Rock up and play sessions
The YLTC holds social aggregate style tennis at four different times during the week. Each of these events provide the opportunity for new players to come and trial tennis prior to committing to becoming a member.
The main aggregate night is Friday night starting at 6.00. Other times where anyone can simply sign-in on the day are Saturday at 1.00 p.m. for all players, Tuesday morning commencing at 9.30 for ladies and Wednesday at 9.00 a.m. for mens social hit.
There is no compulsion to attend each of these on a weekly basis although once you have tried it once it will be hard to not keep going back.
