Player numbers continue to be strong with a number of newer players and longer-term members playing regularly.
Practice sessions also appear to have grown in number and participation rates, which are both a positive sign for the club.
Way back in late February the debut of a new club event was marked, “Bazza’s Quirky Calendars”, which has been instigated in honour of the contribution made by Barry Jackson to the club over many years.
Barry has been a committee member and player who has also been the resident artist in charge of designing and producing event calendars, flyers and promotional material.
The event format was a best of three frames knockout tournament that was played over Monday and Tuesday February 22 and 23 with a big field chasing the inaugural title.
The very much in form and improving Dan Young prevailed in the final over Heie Hansen to top off what has been a very impressive run of form to start 2021.
Dan is a former Melbourne competition pool player who credits his results and ability to two great former coaches in Jack Halligan and Terry Axford.
Social play on Wednesday, February 24 saw the ever consistent Tony Cincotta prevail over Darren Edwards. Tony’s investment in a new cue appears to be paying early dividends as both he and Darren had some good wins to get to that evening’s final table.
Heie Hansen bounced back to take out the club challenge on Monday March 1 over Deb Harbrow. Heie has played a lot of snooker over the years, being a proprietor of a snooker hall earlier in life and looks like getting back to form as he plays more frames.
Congratulations also go to Deb on making the final and her wins in preliminary rounds.
The social event on Wednesday, March 3 saw Dave Mark, who travels from Oaklands every snooker night, prevail over Heie to collect the Mulwala Club voucher.
Congratulations to both players on what was another well contested event.
A round of the Diggers Tribute was contested on Monday, March 8 and former Oceania Champion, Adrien Ridley, got home in a very high quality final over reigning club champion Darren Thompson. It’s great to see Adrien in form and it is compulsory viewing for most members to watch him playing when in such form.
Well done also to Darren for making the final table and taking that match right up to Adrien.
It only took 48 hours for Adrien to meet his match however, when his niece Mia Machetta took him down in the first round of Wednesday, March 10 social event. According to Adrien, Mia knocked in two superb shots to win their match, then went on to take out the night’s event when she defeated Hans Lang in the final.
Monday, March 15 and Tuesday, March 16 saw the preliminary rounds of the very prestigious Bruce Bond Trophy being contested.
The final will be held on Monday, March 22 between Heie Hansen and Tony Cincotta and the odds are that both of these regular practice partners will be very keen to add their name to the perpetual trophy named in honour of a great contributor to the club.
Daryl McKernan staged 2 comebacks to take out the social event on Wednesday, March 17. Daryl got over Hans Lang in the semi-final by potting the black ball then prevailed in a very close finish over Deb Harbrow in the final. Congratulations also go to Deb for making another final in what is a very good run of form for her.
