The last time the U12s met Albury they lost 77-0 at home. Albury are a strong outside running team and the Roos couldn’t match them. This time, it was Tigers home ground.
Training during the week was focused around maximizing pressure around the ball and creating contests. The tackle bags were put to good use by the coaches to focus the boys on hard contested footy. The aim was to stop the outside run of the Tigers as the team’s priority to put the Roo boys in a position to pull off an unlikely win against the top placed Albury.
From the first bounce the pressure on the ball carrier was immense. Albury had repeated forward 50 entries however the defensive pressure of the Roo boys led by Will Forrest ensured Albury remained goalless for the quarter.
Quarter 2 started much the same with the Roos applying pressure and the Albury boys struggling to cope. The Roos were breaking down in the half forward line with the ball not spending a lot of time if their forward half.
Down back Cooper Gerhard found himself alone against two Albury players with just him between them and a certain goal. Cooper refused to yield and managed to tie them up until help could arrive. Cooper was having a great quarter and stopped two certain goals. Both teams entered the half time break with no majors on the board.
At half time the message was continue the great pressure on the ball as well as working it forward in a more structured way. After huddling under a team blanket the Albury players came out and put two quick goals on the board despite the pressure from the Corowa players. Cooper Gerhard, Josh Hunter and Aiden Wintle were ferocious down back with the pressure they were applying.
The final quarter didn’t pan out the way the Roos wanted even though they were linking up better with the boys hitting their targets. Albury put another goal on the board to end the game 22-0.
Whilst the result on the scoreboard wasn’t what the players were looking for the coaches were very proud of the boys for their efforts.

Grey skies welcomed the young Roos at the Sportsground against the second placed Albury.
Early play saw the boys having plenty of the ball without producing scores on the board. The forwards were sharing the ball well but just couldn’t get just desserts.
Longmire, Forge and Murray-Wright were providing great targets but half time saw the boys down by 9 points. Continued pressure from Hanrahan, Coppolino, Northey in the midfield saw the floodgates start open, however, the backline was standing firm with some great rebound football.
Bottom agers like Anderson, Ireland and Moore started to gain confidence and the second half saw the young Roos pile on 7.6 goals to 2 points and record a terrific 37-point win.
Forge was dominant with 5 goals and Longmire slotted 3.

After a month off, the Roos struggled early with all aspects of the game against the Tigers.
However, the endeavor was there, the tackling, the chasing, and the smothering all terrific. It covered the Roos poor kicking and handball and the nonexistent talk that was on show in the first term.
Mitch Parker, Judd Kuschert, Jaxson Bolger and Lachie Hogan were winning the ball out of the middle but turning it over and Albury pounced every time. This put the half back line under the pump.
Jay Lavis after 5 games at nationals was stiff early but warmed up and mopped everything up across half back. Angus Coghill at centre half back was having a good battle with his opponent and held the position well.
Angus Massey was asked to man Albury’s small forward who was creating headaches, and again he made the team sacrifice and blanketed the kid, helping turn the game.
2.4 to Albury was not an indication of their effort, as the Roos managed 4 goals straight to have a small lead.
The morning alarm bells had to be rung and the quaddie king coach Peter Rippingale as he is now known, according to the match day record, reminded the lads that a finals chance was slipping away, and a response was needed.
The term 2 response was highlighted by good ball use and good communication.
Isaac Dickinson also of the 5 games at nationals was a clear winner and kicked 2 for the term, Nick Sandral’s left foot snap a highlight, and with Jay Lavis sneaking forward for a goal we had a lead at the half 47 to 25.
The third term saw Tom McGrath dominate his wing, and his fellow winger Blake Keenes start to have and influence as they ran hard up and down the ground. Caile Duryea and Jack Eales bobbed up and made their presence across half forward and with Tom Forrest moving into the ruck, he would dominate around the ground.
So, 68 to 27 at the last change, Brodie Julian after 6 weeks with injury got more game time and managed to have an influence. Harry Ireland made some solid tackles to help keep the ball in the forward half- his only blemish was a missed goal from 15 out, kicking into a strong head wind no doubt, coming up short.
With the Roos dominating general play, they walked away with a 44-point win.
