A big promoter of local sport, the Godfathers donated $1,000 towards the purchase of shirts for female participants.
“We just want to support junior sport, and this is a fantastic opportunity in the lead-up eventually to having competitive women’s cricket in Yarrawonga/Mulwala,” Godfathers President Graham Wilson said. “In the meantime, the girls can practise and play interclub games in the shirts.”
Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket Club’s Peter Brear referred to the Godfathers as long supporters of sport in the community. “It’s great to have this partnership,” he said.
“We took possession of the shirts about a month ago and it’s great to have this uniform.”
His appreciation extended to the Judds clothing store where fitting out was done and the wording on the shirt was also carried out. “We were happy to be involved, in seeing local women’s cricket start up,” Michelle Clarke from Judds said.
Female numbers have been building over the last couple of seasons since the program was introduced. “The girls have been working hard at developing their fundamental skills,” club junior co-ordinator Al Mitchell said.
“This began under the expert tutelage of local YCP-12, P-6 Physical Education teacher, Carolyn Willett. She launched the program and gave the girls a great base.
“This season the girls have built on their skills to use in modified matches.”
At the Junior Presentation night last year Al mentioned the club was looking to build girl participation numbers. “I was approached by Graham Wilson, from The Godfathers, that they would be interested in supporting the All-Girls Cricket League in any way they could. I approached Michelle Clarke from Judds about making a playing T-Shirt for the girls,” he said.
“The money that paid for the T-Shirts was kindly donated from The Godfathers Yarrawonga, with Marty Cummins presenting me with a cheque for $1000.”
