The team is still searching for their first win of the season after going down against Tocumwal last weekend 30.20 (200) to 2.0 (12).
Cutters senior coach Adam Bourke said his review of the game against Tocumwal saw signs of improvement, but the team have to provide more of a contest in the midfield to be more competitive.
“What’s hurting us is we’re not winning it out of the centre, which puts us immediately on the back foot,” he said.
“We’ve got a young ruckman who has been a bit hot and cold, but unfortunately can’t seem to give our midfielders first use of the ball at the moment.
“We’re a young team, but our skills are not up to standard.”
The Cutters returned to the scoreboard this week, kicking two straight goals.
Bourke said he was pleased about the opportunities the team are creating, but he said there is room to grow in this area.
“We have had some good passages of play, getting those two goals on the weekend.
“Although we probably should be hitting the scoreboard more with the chances we are getting.
“Skill errors and fitness are hurting us.
“Unfortunately, we have two, three or four of our better players out currently.”
The Cutters face a stern test at home against a Katamatite side.
Kattty has only lost one game for the season, and has the second-highest percentage in the competition.
Despite this, the Cutters will still be looking for an upset each week, Bourke said, with opportunities possible at this stage of the season.
“Some of the better teams in the competition are probably looking to rest a couple of their better players at this stage of the season.
“We want to put pressure on the ball and get it going our way.
“The main thing I’ve really been enforcing and saying to our team is that we’ve got to give four quarters of effort.
“Whether we’re playing a talented side or not, we’ve got to get the little things right.
“We’ll be more competitive, and we’ll be in games if we do that.
“Saying that our effort was way better last week. It just has to be better for longer.”
