Echuca Tennis Club’s annual Easter tournament is entering its 98th edition this weekend and the 300 entries are maxed out for a blockbuster weekend.
The event started in 1923, but with world events causing five to be missed in the 20th century, the tournament is now fast approaching the milestone 100.
The action gets started on Good Friday with the singles draws, before doubles take centre stage on Saturday and the mixed and family grades on Sunday.
Senior grades run from A-D, with junior categories also available for under-12 and under-16.
Most events are in a round-robin format, so all competitors are guaranteed several matches over the course of the event.
Local tennis aficionados are sure to try their hand, but the event is also a big draw outside the area.
The first Echuca Easter tournament was held on the Victoria Park oval in 1923.
“We do get lots of locals, but the amount of people that influx into Echuca Moama over the Easter period (is great) and they get their entries in early,” club representative Roger Kirchhofer said,
“It's good for the caravan parks, the clubs and pubs, a great thing for the town.
“The people who come in love our town, love our weather and they come back year after year.”
There’s plenty to entertain surrounding the on-court action for attendees, with happy hour after play on Friday, yoga on the courts on Saturday morning and Easter games on Sunday.
The event will also host the first Murray Gums one point slam after play on Saturday, following the success of the format at the Australian Open.
“I've been playing there since 1979,” Kirchhofer said.
“It's a wonderful hard-working committee and lots of volunteers.”
