Players included four visitors from Sydney who thoroughly enjoyed their time in Yarrawonga as well as the bridge. They have promised to return next year.
There were some freakish hands on that afternoon. Board six featured eight diamonds in one hand while partner held seven clubs.
All thirteen tricks were available in either suit with only 26 high card points between the two hands. The void in one and the singleton in the other made all the difference.
On Board 15, seven diamonds made on a combined 27 count, and on still another hand, seven clubs rolled in on 28 points – totals well below the normal 33 points needed for a small slam. Voids and singletons again played important roles.
Big hands abounded. Nineteen of the 28 deals made game or slam. Some were easy to bid while others required quite a bit more thought – and some luck.
Carol and Peter Henderson took the honours on the day with 67.7%.
In second place, two of the visitors, Lesley Morris and Sue Niven on 64.6% just pipped Jan and Tom Hackett who finished the day third on 64.1%
However, their score was enough to keep them in first place overall to take out the Autumn Pairs for this year. Tom and Jan amassed 436.5 points ahead of Peter and Carol on 371.7 and Rod Carroll and Anna Castles on 354.9.
Thursday night’s hands went the opposite way with many requiring disciplined bidding to stop in a part score which was the only makeable spot.
The Hacketts handled the deals best to come in with 61.6%. Greg Bishop and Joyce Oberman finished in second place with 58.8% while the Hendersons took out third spot with 57.4%.
Bridge Club welcomes ‘newbies’
The Yarrawonga Bridge club welcomed four new players from the recent lessons to the wonderful world of competitive Bridge.
They joined two other newcomers to swell the tale numbers to five and a half.
All of the “newbies” are doing well, and everyone hopes they enjoy the Bridge and the friendship with the other players.
Quite a few hands featured long suits. Those people sitting East-West had six hands with a seven-card suit. These distributions are often difficult to handle.
Peter and Carol Henderson showed the rest how to do it with a 72.4 per cent result.
Second behind them were David Ware and Les Williams on 57.6 per cent, just a smidgin’ ahead of Jan and Tom Hackett on 57.5 per cent.
Of notable mention are Deb Williamson and Gail Peters, two of the new players, who finished fourth on 55.4 per cent in their first game as a new partnership.
