There was a good crowd out at Colbinabbin Recreation Reserve, with the home fans watching the Hoppers pick up a 35-point win over North Bendigo.
A strong Colbinabbin defence held the Bulldogs to just 1.7 through the first three quarters, before running out 9.13 (67) to 4.8 (32) winners.
Jed Brain and Todd Clarke kicked two goals each for Colbo, while Benjamin Barton, Matthew Riordan, Hadleigh Sirett, Sam Ryan and David Price among the best for the Hoppers.
LBU also started the new season on a high with an emphatic 69-point win over the Demons in White Hills.
The Cats lead at every break on their way to a 20.12 (132) to 9.9 (63) win over the Demons. Seven goals to two for LBU in the last term saw the margin tip over the 10-goal mark.
Anthony McMahon had a great game for the Cats booting six goals, with Rhys Woodland, Ben Fulford and Jesse Collins each kicking three majors.
Around the park, McMahon, Tyler Phillips, Joseph Wolfe, Stanley Brentnall, Jesse Collins and Luke Collins were the top performers for the Cats on Saturday.
In Elmore, the Bloods couldn’t join LBU and Colbo on the round one winner’s list, falling to Mount Pleasant by 37 points.
The Mounts were too good for Elmore, defeating the home side 13.20 (98) to 8.13 (61).
The damage could have been far worse for the Bloods, with Mount Pleasant’s inaccuracy stopping the margin from blowing out even more.
Sebastian De Napoli was Elmore’s leading goalkicker on the day with three, while Dylan Friedberger snagged two majors.
De Napoli, Matt Gilmour, Matthew Nettlefold, Dylan Gordon, Kyle Armstrong and Sam McHale were Elmore’s best in round one.
On the netball court, Elmore had better fortunes with a narrow 35-32 win over the Mounts. Colbinabbin also won in round one, topping North Bendigo 39-27, while LBU lost 55-28 to White Hills in their season opener.
