Strathmerton: Not submitted.
In front of their biggest home crowd of the season the Hoppers hosted Strathmerton on a beautiful Rennie winter’s day.
Coming up against a top 3 team, the Hoppers were in the game early having a similar amount of inside 50’s as McKimmie was dominant in the gut.
Sudholz fresh off the redeye from Darwin was strong and Shaw was solid at half back.
The problem was the final kick into the forward line was poor and Strathy were able to fan wide on the rebound and move the ball quickly into its forward line where they had a big target.
Ditto term 2 and Rennie were 11 goals down.
After half time Rennie were able to get more structure through half forward with Damien Payne, playing his first game for Rennie after a long and distinguished career.
39 years after his dad won his first flag at the club, kicked 2 goals, then in the final term Lach “Plugger” Elliott kicked his first goal in his first game as he became debutante number 24 for the season.
Yes, Rennie lost easily, but they showed when they transition the ball and kick well, they can match it for extended periods with strong teams.
McKimmie was enormous all day for the Hoppers in a great display.
Awards: Best on Ground - Tom McKimmie. Sponsored By Kennedy Builders: Tom Kennedy, James Shaw, Adam Nish, Lach Elliott and Damien Payne.
