Irvine family stars in T20 Clash with Katunga

Thankfully the team was able to reach a mutual agreement with Katunga to play a T20 match instead, giving the boys valuable game time in a competitive setting.

The game was a special occasion for the Irvine family, with Rob taking the field alongside his four sons, a rare moment he hasn’t had the chance to enjoy for some time.

The morning began with a simple but meaningful cap presentation. Club captain and coach Tom Irvine presented Nick, Rob, and Ben with their official Tunga baggy greens, making them club caps #31, #32, and #33 respectively.

Tom then won the toss and elected to bat first, sending brothers Ben and Nick to open the innings. The pair made a strong start, building a solid partnership until Nick was bowled for 75.

Travis joined Ben at the crease and immediately impressed with his attacking intent, playing with confidence and purpose.

Their partnership added 14 runs before Ben was caught out for a well-played 60.

Captain Tom then came to the crease determined to build on the strong start. He formed a productive partnership with Travis, adding 37 runs before Tom was bowled.

Jezza followed and immediately showed why he was last week’s standout performer. He played some excellent shots and proved he was no one-hit wonder. Travis (32) then selflessly retired to allow another teammate to contribute.

Tyler and Jezza added a further 12 runs before Tyler was run out attempting a quick single. Phil came to the crease and finally found the middle of the bat, something he’d been missing in recent innings.

Jezza was retired not out on 30, and Archie took his place. The innings concluded after 20 overs with a competitive total of 4/179, with Phil and Archie both remaining not out.

After a short break, the Hoppers were eager to see what their bowlers could achieve.

Rob and Jimmy Irvine led the charge, with Rob starting the attack and finishing his three-over spell with two wickets.

The team kept Katunga under constant pressure, taking advantage of every opportunity.

Ben and Nick also contributed strongly in the field. Ben claimed two wickets, while Nick took one and produced several excellent fielding efforts, saving runs and supporting the bowling attack.

Jezza proved to be the team’s Swiss Army knife — dependable and versatile — and finished the match in style. He took two crucial wickets in the final over, sealing the victory as Katunga finished on 7/134.
