Played at the scenic Gardens Oval in Benalla, the YMCC lost the toss and were sent into bat. Openers Ben Irvine and Matt Casey produced a combined 8 runs from 22 balls. Harry Wheeler and Ben Radford, both promoted up the order, steadied the innings with a 77-run partnership with Radford scoring 37 before he was dismissed with the score on 87.
Wheeler then combined with the hard-hitting Fraser Smart to take the score past 100; Wheeler out for 46 with the team score on 109.
Smart was able to score his first A Grade 50 hitting 56 off 54 balls and shared in a 50-run partnership with captain Reid Clarke. Late order hitting saw Kyle Archibald score 20 from 15 balls and Angus McMillan add 5 in a team total of 7 for 201 from 40 overs.
After a short interval, YMCC took to the bowling crease and struck first ball of the innings through Angus McMillan with Matt Casey taking the catch. McMillan was able to remove both openers to finish with figures of 2 for 22 off 8 overs.
Spin twins in Brock McCabe and Matt Casey took control of the game; McCabe 2 for 15 off 8 overs and Casey 2 for 12 off 8 overs keeping the game in Yarrawonga Mulwala’s advantage.
The YMCC were never in trouble restricting the Benalla team to just 101 for their innings all out. Ben Radford had figures of 2 for 24 from 5 overs; Matt McCabe 0 for 11 off 4 overs, Rory Bartlett 0 for 15 off 4 overs and Harry Wheeler claiming the final wicket with 1 for 1 off 2.3 overs.
Next Saturday sees the Yarrawonga Mulwala team return to home soil at the Stan Hargreaves Oval in Yarrawonga to take on Ovens Valley United in A Grade action.
House’s hat-trick in A Reserve win
A Reserve took on Benalla Bushrangers at Vic Park on Saturday winning the toss and electing to bat.
The innings got off to a good a good start with Ben Welsh punishing the short ball from the word go.
There were several small partnerships early, but the top and middle order failed to capitalise. Captain Mitch Collins-Bye shouldered the load and helped his team produce a defendable score with the help of Brendan Hill. The pair putt on 46 for the 8th wicket before Collins-Bye was dismissed. Collins-Bye finished with 46 to top score for the Lakers.
Other batsmen to reach double figures for the Lakers were Ben Welsh 17, Ben Kennedy 17, Brendan Hill 16 and Lach Phillips 12. The Lakers were all out in the final over for 144.
The Lakers bowled tight early with Jyda House making early inroads with two wickets from the final two balls of his 4th over, to have Benalla 2/12. Then with the first ball of his 5th over House struck again to complete a hat-trick. House broke through again in his sixth over to have the first four Benalla wickets and the Bushrangers reeling at 4/23.
Benalla never really recovered from this as the Lakers continued to bowl and field well.
House was brought back into the attack in the 32nd over and completed the Benalla innings by finding the edge for a safe caught behind dismissal by Ben Welsh to finish the day with five wickets.
House’s figures were outstanding with 6.4 overs, 2 maidens, 5 for 10.
Benalla were all out for 100 with another good win to the Lakers A Reserve team.
Other wicket takers were one each to Bailey Frauenfelder, Tom Draffin, Lach Phillips and Tom Lovel.
A Reserve now head to Whorouly next week to take on Ovens Valley United.
B Grade
B Grade travelled to Milawa on Saturday. With a lush and slightly damp outfield greeting the teams, the Lakers won the toss and decided to bat. Runs were hard to come by for the Lakers as value for shots did not happen with the lush outfield. Milawa bowled a good line and length to restrict the Lakers and not give them any easy scoring opportunities.
Rod Peters and Jett Peters put on a 50-run partnership to give the Lakers a semi respectable total. After being 5/59, 6/109 was better. The Lakers could only push on to 8/117 at the end of their 36 overs. Best with the bat were Rod Peters 26, Jett Peters and Adam Dodd 20 each and Justin O’Brien 19.
With only 117 to defend it was going to be tough for the Lakers. Captain Gary Browning implored his bowlers to bowl full and on or outside off stump. But something must have been lost in translation as the Milawa bats pounced on anything short of a length or pitched on leg.
Milawa’s captain was fierce on any of these deliveries and made a quick fire 53 from 29 balls. Even after this early onslaught the Lakers bowlers were still unable to bowl consistent line and length as the Milawa bats continued to find easy runs. Milawa passed the Lakers’ total 2 wickets down in the 20th over. With the arrival of rain at the end of the 27th over stumps were pulled with the Lakers falling to their second consecutive defeat against other top four sides.
Next week sees the Lakers B Grade back at Mulwala on the turf to take on Greta in the Lakers last home and away game. A must win for the Lakers to keep their finals hopes alive. With Delatite pulling out of B Grade several weeks ago due to lack of numbers, the Lakers have the bye leading into the finals.
C Grade’s 3 wicket win
Yarrawonga Mulwala C Grade have scored a confidence building win over Rovers United Bruck at Victoria Park Oval 2 in Yarrawonga.
Pat Martin scored 26 runs opening the innings and shared partnerships with Steve Lappin who scored 70 from 81 balls and Josh Bozzola 42 from 37 balls to set up a defendable target of 7 for 198 from 36 overs.
Father son duo Craig and Hunter Frauenfelder shared the crease late in the innings with Hunter making 24 off 11 balls and Craig 16 off 18 balls.
With the ball, the YMCC restricted the scoring with an opening partnership off 44 and a sixth wicket partnership of 59 runs the only resistance in a total of 7 for 145. Austin Willett took 2 for 12 from 8 overs and Ted Graham 2 for 19 off 8 overs the wicket takers along with 3 run-outs.
Next week is Yarrawonga Mulwala at home again against Ovens Valley at Vic Park Number 2 oval.
Under 16s score two wins
Round 8 and 9 meant the YMCC Under 16s had to win consecutive games in order to be a chance of playing finals and ticked off the first of those wins with a gritty performance over City colts at home, 132 to 116.
Lachlan Phillips led the way with a solid 47, and the two Ollies (Ollie Cope and Ollie Connell) both contributing to the scoreboard.
Ollie Cope and Tom Lovell were the key wicket-takers claiming 2 wickets each, while other wickets were shared between Tom Coffey, Gus Saunders, Lachlan Phillips and Jobe Fraser.
For Round 9 it was to Barmutha Park for the last game of the season in a do-or-die clash against Beechworth. After winning the toss with the game to be played in quarters, YMCC sent Beechworth into bat.
While everyone was bowling good line and length Beechworth made their way to 3 for 68 with the young gun off spinner TJ Docking taking 2 wickets and Ollie Connell taking the other.
YMCC then went in to face their 20 overs with Geoffrey Montgomery and Jobe Fraser getting off to a great start with Jobe making 36 before falling late in the day and Geoffrey on 17 not out. With the total at 1-71, the boys held the slimmest of leads.
Day 2 arrived and Beechworth started solidly as Clancy Elliot produced another fine innings for his team making his way to another 100 before retiring not out, Beechworth finished their innings on 5-152, with Lachlan Phillips claiming a wicket and Ollie Cope getting a great run out.
With Beechworth taking a lead of 80 the boys knew they had a game on their hands if they wanted to stay alive in the season, Geoff and Ollie Cope started off brilliantly playing straight as well as finding the gaps to keep the score ticking over and putting pressure on their opponents.
Ollie Cope got to 23 before being run out, but more importantly helped get the score to 143, with 10 runs to win and 7 overs left. YMCC nudged their way to victory with Geoffrey Montgomery putting in his finest game of the season to carry his bat for the entire innings to finish on 53 not out. While awaiting results this final round, the two wins should see the YMCC U16s make the top 4 and play off in the semi-finals next weekend. Well done boys.
Sullivan’s hat trick in under 14s win
The second day of the Under 14s Lakers match against Rutherglen at Barkly Park saw the home side resume on 3/21.
The Lakers took a couple of quick wickets in the first 3 overs. Nate Kreeck had his first wicket of the day with an lbw. Nate Sheridan then took a strong catch from the bowling of Kade Michael.
Rutherglen put on a strong batting partnership that saw them proceed to 3/72 before Kade Sullivan bowled the 36th over. The third ball of the over saw him take his first wicket leg before. The next ball saw him remove the off-stump bail - two wickets in two balls.
The Lakers could sense excitement in the air and the field was up and about. Sullivan came in for the last ball of the over and his delivery saw the batsman spoon it into the air and a great diving catch was taken by Lucas Eales at square leg. A hat trick for Sullivan! Rutherglen finished their innings on 9/83.
Resuming on 3/44 the Lakers needed 40 runs to win from 20 overs. Nate Kreeck and Nate Sheridan picked up where they left off the previous week. Their partnership of 42 was broken when Kreeck was bowled, with 10 overs to go and 16 runs required and 5 wickets in hand. Nate Sheridan and Kade Sullivan’s partnership of 26 secured the win for the Lakers in the 33rd Over. Sheridan top scored with 40 and the Lakers finished on 9/100.
It was great to have two wins from our last two games of the year - a reward for all the players’ hard work.
A huge thank you to Ash and Brandon for their coaching and guidance of the players this season. The boys have all enjoyed themselves and their cricket has really improved.
Thank you to our generous sponsors Yarrawonga Mulwala’s Golf Club Resort, Skin Ski & Surf, Wingates, Crusty Loaf and Yarra Fish & Chips for their continued support this season. Thanks also to Kerryn for her video footage of our games!
