With rain across most of the state over the holiday period – the wicket was green and grassy.
The weather was warm and humid too and Delatite won the toss and chose to bowl.
Reid Clarke and Matt Knight opened the batting for the Lakers. Knight got off to a fast start but was caught for 8.
Matt Casey was next at the crease and soon departed for 3 and Clarke was out not long after for 9. The Lakers 3/39.
Fraser Smart and Brock McCabe were next at the crease. With the ball seaming around, Brock looked to dig in. Smart on the other hand played his natural game and smashed three fours on his way to top score for the Lakers with 23 runs.
Unfortunately, Smart was out caught and McCabe was also caught soon after at first slip for 6 runs. The Lakers now 5/60 after just 15 overs.
Ben McDonald and Captain Angus McMillan saw out some accurate bowling and made it to the halfway drinks break 5/68.
McMillan pushed on and punished the loose deliveries while McDonald batted patiently as usual. McDonald left one too many balls and was given LBW for 2. The Lakers now 6/83.
McMillan was joined by James Irvine and the pair looked to increase the run rate.
McMillan glanced down legside for a couple of runs before he tried again and was given LBW for 21.
Matt McCabe was in and out for 0 after he spooned a drive to mid-off. The Lakers 8/91.
Jim Irvine and Angus Heslin made handy cameos at the end and finished with 11 and 12 runs respectively to push the score over 100.
Van Kreeck batted technically to hold down an end to finish the innings with red ink.
The Lakers bowled out in the final over for 118. Afternoon tea was quickly snapped up with egg sandwiches the highlight.
With a small total to defend, the Lakers needed to bowl well. Irvine and Heslin opened the bowling to no avail.
Brock McCabe and McMillan soon took the ball and McCabe struck first with a stumping from Clarke. Delatite 1/31.
Many plays and misses continued, and the Lakers bowlers remained patient.
Matt McCabe was given the ball and removed the Delatite openers bails with a seaming delivery – 2/25.
Brock continued his spell and had another wicket, caught Van Kreeck. Delatite 3/53.
Matt Knight then bowled some seamers and got a wicket in his second over caught Clarke – 4/57.
The Lakers needing 5 more wickets and Delatite requiring 62 more runs from 22 overs.
The pace brigade returned for their second spells. However, from then on it was all Delatite as they patiently hit anything with length or width to the boundary or close to it.
Delatite passed the Lakers 118 with a few overs remaining.
Late wickets from McMillan, Kreeck and a handy run out from the Clarke and McMillan duo rounded out the game.
Delatite finishing 7/143 from their 40 overs.
The bowlers finished with the following figures.
James Irvine 5 overs 0/29
Angus Heslin 7 overs 0/36
Angus McMillan 8 overs 1/14 including 2 maidens.
Brock McCabe 8 overs 2/16 including 2 maidens.
Matt McCabe 6 overs 1/22
Matt Knight 3 overs 1/11
Van Kreeck 2 overs 1/14
Ben McDonald 1 over 0/1
Overall, Delatite’s accurate bowling and fielding was too much for the Lakers who just couldn’t score enough runs.
A big thank you to Delatite for their hospitality and the spirit in which they play the game.
This week, the Lakers take on the fourth placed Beechworth in another one-day game at home at Stan Hargreaves Oval – Vic Park in Yarrawonga from 1pm.
See you there.
