Another glorious Saturday and the loyal Lions supporters again came along for the second home game in a row against another final’s aspirant.
Once again, the senior Lions team came out firing. The attack on the ball was fierce early led by Matty Gorman and Brad Wilson through the middle and Lach Rouel and Josh Tonna out of defense. The gun forwards in Jack Sutherland and Sean Robinson had their straight kicking shoes on and were capitalizing on good work provided from further up the ground.
Mulwala’s accuracy had Deni on the back foot and the home team went into quarter time with a handy five goal lead.
Deni fought back in the second but the pressure from Mulwala’s defensive players in Pickle Beams, Dylan McNamara and Harry Meade caused their inaccuracy which kept Mulwala’s lead intact.
Owen Conway playing the sole ruck position for the day was combatting well against his larger opponent and along with Beau Clarke were providing plenty of marking contests allowing Tommy Dow, Adam Rouell and Jett Peters plenty of crumbs to pick up and continually thrust Mulwala forward.
It was a strong contest all day, but Mulwala had all the answers to run away with a convincing victory.
Reserves
Mulwala 5.7.37 defeated by Deni Rams 7.7.49.
The reserves had several players come back into the team this week and they needed to against a very strong Deni team.
In a ripping contest early Josh Hammond and Angus Heslin were providing plenty of options forward. Co-Coach Nathan Beasley and Cam Carling were handy returns to the backline assisting Seb Hargreaves and Henry Lonergan and were linking nicely with Flynn Fletcher and Matt McLachlan through the middle of the ground.
Charlie McKenna and Kyle Abikhair were using their speed and moving the ball smoothly while Sam Davies playing his first game in Lions colors was proving that he will be a handy pick up throughout the year.
A close contest all day saw Deni get the four points in what otherwise was a great test to see where the boys are at.
Goals: Jack Macdermid 3, Cameron Carling 1, Austin Frauenfelder 1.
Best: Matthew McLachlan, Joshua Hammond, Flynn Fletcher, Angus Heslin, Sam Davies, Kyle Abikhair.
Thirds
Mulwala 3.7.25 defeated by Deni Rams 6.11.47.
Coming up against another strong team, Coach House was asking for nothing but effort from the young Thirds team which again they delivered in spades.
Harry Barker, Brock Johnson and Josh Eder were great all day in the backline.
Riley Mitchell and Ethan Lay were providing plenty of run and Jett Peters battled all day through the middle of the ground and worked hard going forward kicking all of Mulwala’s goals.
It was another very pleasing game for the supporters to see just how much the whole team is improving and working together.
The boys have been great all season and it is a credit to their commitment to each other that will see another win come shortly.
Goals: Jett Peters 3.
Best: Jett Peters, Ethan Lay, Riley Mitchell, Josh Eder, Player, Riley Egan.
Fourths
Mulwala 14.19.103 defeated Deni Rams 0.0.0.
Two games in a row against possible finals teams and the result was similar to last week. The Lion Cubs were a little slower off the mark this week and it was again the backline led by Maiko Leith that was stopping the Deni forward opportunities.
Zach Wheeler, Archie Purtle and Ollie Nagle were winning all the one-on-one contests deep in defense and Ollie Watson and Axel Saunders were linking through the middle of the ground giving the forwards great delivery.
Brothers Jai and Sonny Sneddon were unstoppable up forward and Charlie Drake was strong in the contest allowing small forwards Archer Kirchen and Sonny O’Bryan to gather the ground balls. Baxter Donovan was brilliant all day in the ruck and his height around the ground was too much for his opposition.
Another fantastic team game that saw all the boys sharing the ball around and doing a lot of the one percenter attributes that will see the team right up there towards the end of the season.
Off to Numurkah this week and then the club will be holding its annual ball back at the rooms so get in contact with Cara if you haven’t got your tickets for what will be a fantastic night and be amongst the Pride of Lions.
