It was a great arm wrestle between Mulwala and the Deni Rams at Lonsdale Reserve on Saturday, with the Lions holding on by three goals to claim third spot on the Murray League ladder, with five rounds remaining.
The playing surface was in a muddy condition after the Mulwala region received a lot of rain during the week.
It was an even contest all game where neither team was prepared to allow much outside run meant that the hard and contested game style of both teams was on display.
The Rams led by one point after the first quarter, with some brilliant defence by Deniliquin's fullback.
The second term was a little tougher, with Mulwala adding four goals to the Rams one.
Kyal Tyson and Josh Ednie were brilliant in defence and Will Robinson and Zach Scott both played great games roving off the strong ruck work of Owen.
There was only a goal between both teams all game with the third quarter seeing the Rams keep the Lions goalless, adding only two points for the quarter while Rams added eight points.
The Rams came out strong in the final term, getting within two points after two quick goals by Todd Gallagher nine minutes in.
But momentum swung back to the Lions.
Mulwala's last five minutes were more precise in ensuring they got the goals needed to be in front at the final siren.

Reserves
Mulwala 23.13.151 def Deniliquin 1.3.9
The game was reasonably close early as the older bodies of Deni were able to control enough of the play to keep Mulwala from scoring heavily.
This was not the case in the second and third quarters as Sean and Jaxen were able to get separation from their defenders and score heavily to put the Reserves well in front. Josh Eder and Damo Cook were relentless on their wings, and Hunter played his best game for the year, albeit mostly in the mud pit that was the centre of the ground.
A convincing team victory that pleased coach Larkin, moving towards finals.

Thirds
Mulwala 6.11.47 def Deniliquin 5.4.34
The Thirds fought out a tough match against a fellow final’s aspirants Deniliquin.
Both teams were playing some fast football and although the Mulwala Thirds got out to a handy three goal lead early in the game, Deniliquin fought back well and the game went down to the wire.
The Mulwala Thirds had the final hand, as they finished on top at the end of the match. Baxter was good in his return game, Hugo and Axel were brilliant in defence all game. Van and Nash both stood up when needed as the game got close.

Fourths
Mulwala 3.6.24 def by Deniliquin 7.7.49
After the week off, the fourths put in the hard yards at training.
A massive inclusion last week as captain Tyce Woodhead played his first game since round 1.
The start of the game was eagerly awaited, and the boys started with a lot of momentum.
Kicking more like Collingwood, the Lions kept the rams in the game.
A tight tussle kept the crowd entertained with great pressure and open running from both teams.
Neck and neck going into the last, it was the rams who made the most of the play, kicking three goals to put the game beyond the young Lions.
A great contest as Fourths are ever improving, week by week.

There was consistent effort from each player that had taken to the court.

The Under 15s came into the game, looking strong.
The first half was neck and neck, with everyone giving it their all.
But in the second half, the puff ran out which allowed for Deniliquin to simply have the game on their terms.
That said the Mulwala Under 15s showed effort, the week to week growth is showing. . Now for the girls; lets break it down in a language only they will understand.
