The Mulwala Lions senior football side has enjoyed a strong start to the 2023 season, sitting on top of the Murray Football League ladder, undefeated after seven rounds.
On Saturday at Lonsdale Reserve, the Lions played their first game against Tocumwal in 13 years and the result showed the stark difference between the two sides now.
Jackson Gash and Matty Gorman gathered possessions at will and the speed of Zac Cuppins was influential in setting up so many forward chances.

Jackson Meade, Jack Sutherland and Jyda House all had great games with the constant flow of opportunities into the forward line.
Tocumwal battled hard all day and it is a credit to them in their first year back in the Murray League to continue to work hard and their reward as a club will come in following years.
Mulwala continued to show the difference in class all day and although it appeared lackluster at times, went on to record a strong 20 goal win.

Reserves
Mulwala: 9.2, 13.5, 19.6, 25.8.158.
Tocumwal: 0.0, 1.1, 1.1, 1.1.7.
The Reserves notched up another important victory and again showed that when all fit, they will be challenging the top sides.
Dylan Scott played well all game, Flynn Fletcher back from injury looked sharp and the forward line of Rory Bartlett, Nathan Beasley and Austin Frauenfelder made good on the many opportunities that came their way.
Addison and Daniel Psaltaris continue to go from strength to strength and along with Kyle Abikhair give the midfield many options.
Goals: R. Bartlett 5, A. Psaltiras 3, N. Beasley 3, A. Frauenfelder 3, c. Oneill 3, D. Psaltiras 3, D. Scott 2, H. Gillies 1, S. Hargreaves 1, S. Davies 1.
Best: D. Scott, F. Fletcher, R. Bartlett, c. Oneill, K. Abikhair, D. Psaltiras.
Thirds
Mulwala 13.10, 13.10, 15.12, 17.18.120.
Tocumwal 0.0, 0.0, 0.2, 1.3.9.
The Under 17s went to work early on a weaker Tocumwal side and the skills and speed of Levi Saunders was torching the opposition off the forward flank as much as the height and strength of Baxter Donovan was in the air.
The midfield were controlling the centre clearances from the clever work of ruckman Brock Johnson down to the grunt work of Jack Walls and Nate Williams to the outside run of Ollie Watson and Jai Sneddon as Tocumwal were no match for Mulwala.
The two-prong attack of Jaxen Wheeler and Mitch Appleby had a field day up forward and Jaxen finished with a nice bag of eight for the day.
Captain Josh Eder was prolific across the halfback line all day and gave the Toc forwards no opportunities as Mulwala notched up a strong victory.
Goals: J. Wheeler 8, M. Appleby 3, L. Saunders 2, O. Nagle 2, B. Donovan 1, C. Drake 1.
Fourths
Mulwala 5.8, 10.11, 15.17, 18.20.128.
Tocumwal 0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0.0.
It is getting to that time of the year that the young cubs are kicking the dew off the grass as much as the ball and the smaller kids are advantaged by the less distance they have to get down to get the ball.
This was evident in the first quarter as Benji Watson was prolific in the forward line crumbing packs and taking marks and if not for some unlucky bounces could have had 4 goals to his name.
The midfield led by Van Kreeck and Maiko Leith were continually winning the ball out of the middle and ably assisted by Axel Saunders and Archie Purtle to which Tocumwal had no answers.
Levi Purtle got in on the goal kicking in the second half as Coach Kreeck left the forward line to the little fellas and Levi, Benji, Archer Kirchen and Alex Richardson all put on a show with the crowd on the edge of their seats.
A convincing victory continues to set the boys up for finals.
Goals: S. O’Bryan 3, L. Purtle 3, B. Watson 2, N. Leith 2, V. Kreeck 2, S. Sneddon 2, A. Kirchen 1, M. Leith 1, A. Saunders 1, H. Donovan 1.
Best: V. Kreeck, B. Watson, M. Leith, A. Saunders, L. Purtle, A. Purtle.
