“There have been excellent numbers – probably the best in quite a number of pre seasons. Obviously there are no signs of a premiership hangover,” club football manager Dale Ferguson told the Yarrawonga Chronicle.
“Our two senior coaches Bodhi (Butts) and Kade (Rowe) have set a good standard. Morale is high amongst the playing group.”
Particularly pleasing to club officials is the top age of the club’s thirds team is staying together at the Lonsdale Reserve Oval and training impressively.
Senior non-playing coach Bodhi Butts and senior playing coach Kade Rowe with Lach Orr who will again be at the helm of the Reserves.
“It’s a sign the club is heading in the right direction,” Mr Ferguson said. “Our side overall has improved from last season, as have probably other sides in the league.”
He is pleased with the recruits to Mulwala for season 2024. Beau Seymour and Max Hemphill from Yarrawonga will be great acquisitions.
Seymour is a tall player who can play both ends of the ground. Hemphill will add plenty of bite onball.
Former Rennie coach Harry Haley will be in Lions’ colours, and can play forward or in the middle.
Will Gorman from Katamatite is a forward and dangerous around the goals.
Back following injury after playing in Mulwala’s 2022 premiership will be Josh Tonna. The versatile footballer is described as “an absolute gem” who “likes the physical content of the game” by the club’s football manager who added: “Josh is a key back or forward who can go through the ruck.” Cameron Magher will also be a welcome return after a shoulder reconstruction.
And, of course, there’s the new playing coach onballer who has a strong football background playing in premierships at Tungamah and Mulwala, and coaching Tocumwal for four seasons.
Missing from last season will be Zac Cuppens and Kaydon Sharp who have moved to Melbourne and Finley respectively for work reasons. As previously advised, the brilliant multi club and league award-winning Jackson Gash is making Queensland his home.
Mulwala’s dual premiership non-playing coach Rohan Davies is coaching Reservoir after two wonderful years at the Lions – the 32-year wait for a premiership in 2022 followed up with back-to-back flag in 2023.
Gash was playing coach for those two seasons and Butts was a coach in 2022 and now back in a non-playing coach role, along with playing coach Kade Rowe, for season 2024.
Lach Orr will again take charge of the Reserves, Mark House again with the Thirds and Ryan Donovan takes over from Brandon Kreeck at the helm of the Fourths.
Netball pre season will start in the New Year. Narelle Donovan and Steph Hammond will be co-coaches of the A Grade team.
Mulwala Football Netball Club President Chris McNamara said the footballers these days are returning for pre seasons in better condition than previously, having done some own pre season work. Even the football manager is not jumping fences or gates this pre season and is injury-free.
“They are working very hard to make it three premierships in a row. We’re doing a lot of work,” the 1989 Yarrawonga premiership player said.
“Players are fit and raring to go. There will be no premiership hangover.”
