The race was an upset victory for Southport Tycoon, winning at $19 despite good lead-up races.
The Australian Guineas is a high-class Victoria Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three year-olds over a distance of 1600m.
The total prize money of the race was more than $1 million.
Southport Tycoon is trained by 2022 Melbourne Cup winning trainer Ciaron Maher Racing for a syndicate which includes the local farmer, who has asked not to be identified.
Sired by the stallion Written Tycoon out of the dam Ready to Rule, the three year-old chestnut colt is just entering its prime with six placings from seven starts and career earnings of $862,250.
At the Australia Guineas on March 2, Southport Tycoon was ridden by Jamie Kah - one of the premier jockeys in the business and the first jockey to ride 100 winners in a Melbourne Metropolitan season.
The colt beat the McEvoy-trained Veight by one and a quarter lengths and the Chris Waller-trained Riff Rocket by two and a quarter lengths, finishing in one minute and 35.48 seconds - the fastest since the 2020 Australian Guineas.
A Group 1 win is every racehorse owner’s dream, but very few get to realise it.
The local part-owner - who entered the syndicate through the Torquay based Bennett Racing - credited much of the success to Bennett Racing.
“A lot of homework was done in the last four years. The correct confirmations and understanding of track condition by Nathan Bennett, the Wells’ and others have been superb.”
The March 2 ride secured Southport Tycoon a spot in next Saturday’s All-Star Mile at Caulfield, but they have chosen to rest the colt for that race.
Southport Tycoon is instead expected to race next in the Doncaster Handicap at Randwick on April 6.
