Lyons’ near hat trick nationals win

The 82-year-old didn’t lose a match after day one and that included beating the eventual winner, 82-year-old eventual winner Frank Bujara from Poona, Victoria in four sets.

Unfortunately it was the first day’s loss, in four sets, to Melbourne’s 83-year-old Tom Slattery that cost Lyons the top prize.

“He was too good,” Lyons commented to the Yarrawonga Chronicle about Slattery. “I was in pretty good form and I played pretty well.”

Winning four of his five matches, Lyons loved the big championships at the Woden Squash Centre which attracted a total of 322 entries in the various age categories starting at 35. Eleven players competed in the 80-84 group.

“We played one match a day and the event was well conducted,” Brian said.
