With the oval doubling as preparation for an upcoming tennis tournament, the ground markings created a unique spectacle, from above, it resembled a giant game of hopscotch.
Despite the unusual layout, both sides embraced the conditions and got on with the job.
The Crays, a little short on numbers, were well supported by the Yarrawonga spirit, with several Pigeons pulling on the opposition jumper for the day.

Yarrawonga unveiled five new Pigeons, with Ash, Moose, Benny K, Brett and Beaso all making their debuts.
Under the guidance of first-game playing coach “Blocka,” who delivered a rousing pre-game address, and with the “Godfather” controlling proceedings from the bench, the Pigeons were primed for Round 1.
The opening half was a tight affair, with both sides showing early-season rust and struggling to convert in front of goal.
New recruit Brett Harding made an immediate impact, booting two goals in the first half to keep Yarra in front.
After the main break, the Pigeons’ bigger bodies began to assert their dominance.
Dodge was a standout, clunking everything that came his way and adding two goals for the term, while Trent Russell popped up with a clever goal to extend the margin.
The game opened up in the final quarter, with Yarrawonga finishing strongly.
Benny Kerwyn was electric up forward with three goals, while Gatty chimed in with one of his own as the Pigeons put the result beyond doubt.
Despite the win, the Yarra boys might find themselves doing a bit of goal-kicking practice at training this week after a wayward 10.14.
The debutants led the charge, with Beaso dominating through the midfield and Brett Harding showcasing strong footy smarts.
Nathan Bibby was once again a constant presence, reading the play beautifully and running his opponents ragged, while Jezza brought his usual toughness and ability to win the footy at will.
Best on ground honours for Yarrawonga went to Beaso, Dodge, Gleeson, Jezza and Brett Harding.
At the final siren, Yarrawonga ran out convincing winners, 10.14 (74) to 2.2 (14).
The match was played in fantastic spirit, with the Murray Crays, as always, a pleasure to compete against, embodying everything Masters football stands for.
The afternoon wrapped up in classic fashion with presentations, a few well-earned beers and pizzas shared among both sides.
Yarrawonga now turns its attention to the North East Gather Round in Wodonga on April 19.
