The Thursday Ladies competition had two separate seasons. This season commenced in early February.
Both of these programs are fantastic events for club members.
Tuesday Mens Tennis
Last Tuesday night was semi-final night and indicating how serious the night was it was noted that some warmups lasted longer than 2 minutes.
The tennis was of a high standard but just as importantly there was a lot of laughter.
In A Grade Laver and McEnroe had a sensational battle. McEnroe were a game in front going into the last two sets before Laver narrowly won both of these to win the night by 2 games.
Skipper Aidan Humphry led the way winning 3 sets for the first time ever.
In the other semi-final Federer won 4 sets to 2 but were able to win easily on games by 13.
Gareth Oughton was the difference winning all of his sets easily.
B Grade semi-finals were played in great spirits. In the first match Lendl and Sampras won 3 sets each before Lendl won by 2 games. This was on the back of another man of the match game by Scott Jaques.
A shout out to Scott who is in unbelievable career best form.
He is now on a 9-match winning streak which is a competition record. He has taken his game to a whole new level which is inspirational to everyone.
Hours of hitting with his hitting partner Andrea has proved beneficial. Great work Scott.
The second B Grade final was equally exciting. The sets were shared 3 each between Agassi and Edberg and like the other semi, Agassi won by 2 games. John Brunner was at his ruthless best clinching 3 sets.
C Grade was just as intense with the prospect of making the final inspiring the players. In the first semi, Becker won 4 sets to 2 sets to clinch a 7-game win.
Skipper Sean Robinson claiming best on court with 3 wins.
Borg had the same set scoreline with Djokovic but Bork were too strong winning by 15 games in the other semi. James Loughnan was in great form to win all of his matches.
This week the Grand Finals are on. A Grade will see Laver play Federer. In B Grade Lendl take on Agassi and in C Grade Becker and Borg do battle.
All other sides will play in consolation finals apart from Wilander.
They finished last and therefore have to stock the refreshments and collect the pizzas.
Thursday Ladies
The final regular round of the Thursday Ladies Competition was played last Thursday. After a heat out, the ladies were keen to get back on court and they really enjoyed their hit.
Thanks to the fill-ins who ensured that all teams had their quota of players.
This week will be the rankings shoot out. This night places players of similar abilities into groups so everyone has a good hit.
Following this there will be presentations then pizza and refreshments to assist to dissect the season.
In last week’s matches Choc Royals had a strong display against Tiny Teddies winning 5 sets to 1. Sandra Banks and Norma Toms were the best for Choc Royals being undefeated.
Mint Slices had a close match claiming 4 sets to 2 against Iced Vo Vos. Captain Erin York was the star winning all 3 sets.
Monte Carlos were dominant against Oreos winning all 6 sets. Zoe Jones, Narelle Bassett, Nicole Dowling and fill in Jonah Melbourne all combined very well.
In the last match of the night Kingstons defeated Tic Tocs 4 sets to 2 although there were some very close sets. Indicating how close it was no player won all of their sets.
The ladder after round 5 is Choc Royals 25, Tim Tams 22, Tic Tocs 18, Monte Carlos 18, Tiny Teddies 17, Mint Slices 16, Kingstons 14, Iced Vo Vos 9 and Oreos 5.
Goulburn Murray Tennis
On Saturday the Grand Final of the Goulburn Murray Tennis will take place. This is the premier competition in the area.
In Division 1 Numurkah is playing Shepparton at Shepparton on Saturday in a match that is predicted to be very close.
Yarrawonga has five players representing Numurkah. Good luck to Grant Chappell, Ellen Bruce, Jack Bassett, Lucy Bassett and Tess Bassett.
Saturday morning tennis
Saturday morning tennis was not played due to the long weekend.
Junior Tennis will resume this Saturday. There will be two more weeks with the last morning on Saturday, March 22.
Club Championships underway
Most of the Club Championship events have been completed. The last few will be completed this week.
