Goulburn Murray Tennis
Extreme heat saw most matches in the Goulburn Murray Tennis Association cancelled over the weekend.
Numurkah’s Division 1 side played Tatura after both teams agreed to a 9.00am start to beat the heat. Yarrawonga’s Jack Bassett, Grant Chappell and Lucy Bassett all recorded strong singles wins. J
ack and Grant combined for an 8–2 doubles victory, with Jack later making it three wins from three by claiming his second doubles match. Lucy also recorded a solid mixed doubles win.
Numurkah went on to win the rubber eight sets to four.
Yarrawonga Division 3 and Numurkah Division 2 will resume this week, while Numurkah Division 1 has the bye.
North East Veterans
The North East Veterans Circuit continued on Sunday with a tournament held at Benalla. The circuit is open to players aged 30 and over, with all matches played in doubles format.
John Brunner continued his strong form, winning his card, while Amy Lairson played exceptionally well to finish runner-up in her group. Ash Wheaton and Ellen Bruce also impressed, producing some excellent shots throughout the day.
Tuesday Men’s Tennis
Extreme heat forced the cancellation of Tuesday Men’s Tennis this week. With a week to reflect — and watch the tennis on television — the competition is expected to return at a high standard.
After Round 9 the ladder reads: Edberg 50, Becker 46, Lendl 42, Borg 40, Laver 40, Nadal 37, Wilander 32, Agassi 31, Djokovic 31, Connors 31, Sampras 30, McEnroe 30, Federer 28.
Saturday Juniors
Due to the ongoing heatwave, the resumption of the Saturday Junior program was delayed by a week.
The program will return with Hot Shots, coaching, match play and the Premier League, offering something for players of all levels. Places remain available across all programs, and new players are encouraged to join.
Wilby and District Tennis
The Wilby and District Tennis Association resumes this week following a heat-affected weekend.
The competition continues to provide social tennis opportunities for players of all ages and abilities across the region and has been instrumental in developing many outstanding local players.
When the fixture was created, the final two rounds were left open to allow for any lost rounds. The updated fixture has now been completed and shared with captains.
After Round 10 the ladder stands: Telford 61, Tungamah 55, Savernake 46, Burramine 40, Wilby 21, Mulwala 17. Once again, powerhouses Telford and Tungamah appear hard to beat heading into finals.
This Friday, top-placed Telford will host second-placed Tungamah at Yarrawonga. Burramine will play Wilby, while Savernake travels to Mulwala.
Thursday Ladies Tennis
The Thursday Ladies competition enjoyed a successful first season, which concluded in early December.
The next six-week season commences this Thursday, February 5.

Social “Rock Up and Play” Sessions
YLTC hosts social aggregate-style tennis on Tuesday mornings at 9.00am for ladies and Wednesday mornings at 9.00am for men.
There is no obligation to attend weekly, although once players try a session, they often keep coming back.
Godfathers Tournament
The annual Godfathers Tournament will be held on Sunday, February 15. The event is a round-robin singles tournament, with each player guaranteed three matches.
Age groups include Under 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 for both boys and girls. Players from across the North East will attend, providing a great opportunity for local juniors to compete against new opponents.
Club Championships
The Junior Club Championships will be played on Saturday and Sunday mornings, February 21 and 22. Due to the high number of participants, this format is the only way the event can be completed.
The Senior Club Championships will be held on Sunday, February 22, promising a vibrant atmosphere with courts full of both junior and senior competitors.
