Any suggestion of a premiership hangover was dismissed outright by coach Steve Johnson. “Definitely not,” he said.
17 and under coaches are Emily McNamara and Sarah Moore.
“I know other teams can fall for that but not us as we have great leaders here who won’t let that happen.”
Helena West and Brittany Flanagan will coach the 15 and under team.
Pre season is proceeding very well with the final workout before Christmas to take place tonight, from 6.00pm at the J C Lowe Oval, followed by a barbecue for all club supporters and a Christmas spirit.
Breanna Strawhorn and Olivia Lovell will coach C Grade netball.
The three-time Geelong premiership star has been pleasantly surprised with how well training is going.
“We had about 40 players rock up first night which was a really good sign – that didn’t include the Thirds. I was surprised to see just how fit the players were and must have done plenty of training beforehand,” Johnson said.
“I was going to ease them back into training then ramp it up but I’ve been able to proceed a bit quicker, which is very good.
“Having tasted success last season, the players want that feeling again and will go flat out for another premiership straight away.
“That will be necessary because we’ll be chased, we’ll be hunted, next season being premiers.”
Yarrawonga’s only premiership player loss from last season will be forward Dylan Conway who was always going to return to Melbourne at some stage. “Overall, we’ll have about 95 per cent playing group again which is fantastic,” Johnson said.
Club president Ross Mulquiney is also pleased with how pre season is proceeding. He also acknowledges other teams will lift that bit extra when confronting Yarrawonga - as all teams in competitions do.
“We just have to prepare ourselves the best we can so we’re ready to play football. I also say well done to the Corowa administration for getting back into the Ovens and Murray league. That was a big effort.”
With a player loss and November 2022 floods engulfing the Corowa clubrooms and ground, the club did not field senior football and netball teams this year.
Netball numbers for all grades of Yarrawonga Netball are good, there’s a lot of good feeling and vibes about season 2024 and coaches for all teams have been finalised.
