In the golfing world, not everyone can say they’ve shot an albatross.

In fact, not even Tiger Woods can say he’s made the ever-so-rare shot.
So when Cobram’s Karl Hindson found himself at the Cobram Barooga Golf Club, standing on the tee of the 16th hole (a par four) after pulling off such a feat, the owner of Poolside Cobram & Yarrawonga couldn’t believe what his eyes were telling him.
“It was pretty surreal,” a humble Hindson told The Courier.
“I’ve never even got an eagle before.”
Hindson made his albatross — and hence his way into the CBGC’s history books — during the club’s CEO Golf Day on Friday, May 30.
“[The drive] looked pretty good off the tee-block, and my playing partner got pretty excited, saying it landed on the green,” he said.
“Then they started to get really excited. I thought it had just rolled off the back, off into the rough.”
While he has played golf since he was 15, and has a handicap of 20, Hindson doesn’t consider himself anything out of the ordinary.
“To my knowledge, there’s only one other person who got a hole-in-one on that hole: Terry Vogel,” he said.
Indeed, the last time anybody pulled off the feat on the 16th hole was in August 1986, when current club superintendent Terry Vogel wrote himself into club history with an albatross from a distance of 239m.

As if shooting an albatross wasn’t enough, Hindson and his playing partners — his father, Keith Hindson, Daniel Ellis and Lenny Power — also won the day’s competition.
Later, Hindson was delighted to discover he’d also won the day’s major raffle, going home with a new car fridge.
The triple delight saw Hindson celebrate his achievement with a few drinks before turning in for the day.
“I never thought I’d even get a hole-in-one, let alone get a par four, an albatross,” Hindson said.
“The old average hack can do some special stuff every now and again.”
