Pigeons soar after big night at awards

The night belonged to two stars at either ends of their journey, with Maisee Pell and Willie Wheeler taking home the club’s top football and netball honours. Pell, still eligible for u17s, was crowned the winner of the Tracey Gillies Medal following a thrilling count, capping off an impressive season for the young Pigeon.

Wheeler claimed the Tom Runnalls Medal, comfortably but it was a close battle for 2nd place with Harry Wheeler eventually winning out to Cam Wilson (3 rd ). Wilson had already enjoyed a remarkable fortnight, having claimed the league’s prestigious Morris Medal just two weeks earlier. He was also recognised with the Chronicle Award as Yarrawonga’s best player for 2026.

Beyond the football awards, the evening also highlighted the enormous contribution made by volunteers and families who help make the Yarrawonga Football Netball Club such an important part of the local community.

Bailey Brear and Lauren Lidgerwood took out the Vodusek family award. The Godfather’s Award, recognising an outstanding contribution to junior sport, was awarded to Bree and Nathan Tresize.

The John Dempsey Award for Club Person of the Year was presented to the Van Den Bosch family, recognising the family’s wonderful contribution to the club throughout the season.

Many would be familiar with Kerryn Van Den Bosch’s tireless work in the club canteen, but the family’s contribution extends well beyond that. Mark and Jack can regularly be found scoring and timekeeping, Anna keeps a close eye on the lolly canteen each week, while Luke helps Kerryn keep the main canteen running.

It was a fitting recognition of a family whose contribution is woven into so many aspects of match day at the Pigeons.

A special mention must also go to Vicky Long, whose outstanding administration and event management helped ensure the Best and Fairest was a wonderfully organised and highly successful evening.

Her work throughout the year has also been instrumental in helping the club run smoothly.
