English fast bowler Frank “Typhoon” Tyson (right) took 76 wickets for his country in 17 Tests — including 7-27 in a Test against Australia during the 1954-55 Ashes series.

He later coached Victoria to a pair of Sheffield Shield wins and was a cricket commentator on the ABC for 26 years.
He was one of the guests at the Girgarre Football Club Sportsman’s Night, alongside former Geelong footballer John Newman (third from left), Trotting Control Board member Frank Ryan and Daily Star journalist Peter Sutton, a nephew of Frank Tyson.
Newman had retired only two years earlier, having played 399 games in a 17-year career which included two best-and-fairest wins.
He would go on to become one of the pivotal (and controversial) characters on one of the best known football television programs in Australia — Channel Nine’s The Footy Show.
Girgarre Football Club president Pat Church and secretary Col Crilly hosted the star quartet.
· Wayne Deledio was announced as captain of Kyabram Football Club for the 1982 season, club president John Davy appointing him to the role in front of participants in the club’s first pre-season training run.
Deledio was also the assistant coach and had Bill Fry as his deputy, a veteran of more than 200 games.
David Long, whose grandson Noah is now playing with West Coast Eagles in the AFL, was deputy vice-captain.
Sutherlands Transport had just come on board as sponsor of the club, announcing a package worth more than $4000 at a function to kick start the 1982 season.
1992
Two Kyabram swimmers had produced some of the best results for their club at the Goulburn Valley Swimming Championships, Kristi Lancaster and Lucy Francis winning several medals at Shepparton’s Raymond West Pool.
Kristi won gold in the 11-12 years section in the 100 and 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley.
She was also part of relay wins in the medley and freestyle events.
In the 12-and-under section she teamed with Ali Willis, Nicole Downe and Nicole Moon to smash a 19-year-old record.
Lucy won gold medals in the 13-14 years freestyle and backstroke events and also shared in gold medals in the relay events.
She also won silver in the open 100m backstroke and bronze in the 200m medley.
· Jon Varcoe had the Kyabram District Cricket Association A-grade Cricketer of the Year award in his keeping, leading Brendan Sleeth by 50 points.
Fire Brigade star Varcoe was ahead of Kyabram’s Sleeth, Girgarre star Jeff Turpin, Tatura’s Ray Doolan, Gavin Napier from Cooma and Mick Auld from Stanhope.
Cooma batsman Mick Buckley led Kyabram opener Jayson Sleeth in the A-reserve competition, while Stanhope veteran Allan McGrath had a big lead over his brother Bill in the B-grade competition.
· A busy off-season of recruiting resulted in six big names landing at Kyabram Recreation Reserve, among them two Diamond Valley league stars Craig Dyson and Renato Marinelli.
At the time Dyson was widely regarded as the best player in his league, having coached Epping to a premiership and played at AFL under-19 level.
Teenager Marinelli had played with Carlton in the underage competition.
Derek Wynn had just finished in the top half-dozen of the VFA’s Liston Medal, while Grant Kemp had arrived as a physical education teacher at St Augustine’s College with a big football reputation.
The 22-year-old was a star with Wodonga and in suburban Melbourne football.
He joined the club alongside two exciting teenagers from Waaia, Glen Coghlan and Graham Walker — both members of that club’s premiership team of 1991.
Dual Girgarre best-and-fairest Jeff Turpin was another inclusion into Bombers’ ranks.
2002
Kyabram Swimming Club coach Ian Young claimed that Brodie Thomson and Sarah Bugoss were the best in a decade after winning several medals at the Goulburn Valley Championships.
Thomson won four gold medals in the 10 years age group and Bugoss three in the eight years division.
She was also a member of the relay team that included Emma Mulcahy, Victoria Mulcahy and Nicola Dunn. Ebony and Gavin Glett, and their father John, all performed well in the championships.
Ann Bugoss, Paul Bugoss, Liz Turner and Kade Turner were others to compete.
The only low point was a 16-year-old relay record held by Kyabram’s Kristi Lancaster, Jody Norman, Ali Willis and Trudy Tonkin being toppled.
· Brad Campbell was the star of Kyabram’s Provincial Group Melbourne Country Week win with a century against Bendigo in the final of the carnival.
Bendigo made 9-193, with all-rounder Greg Pearse taking three wickets and Campbell chiming in with two wickets alongside Rohan Larkin.
It was Campbell’s second century of the week, leading a recovery after Kyabram was 4-55 in its run chase.
He combined with Brad Mueller and David Newman to take Kyabram to a three-wicket victory.
Campbell scored 447 runs at an average of 89.4 for the week, including a century against Mornington Peninsula, which led to it losing its first game in five years.
· A pair of Kyabram bowlers, Mick Humphreys and Geoff Tinning, had secured major singles championships within a week of one another.
Humphreys won the Campaspe Valley Bowling Association’s Champion of Champions title, while Tinning also won an association singles title.
Kyabram’s Greg Shilling and Russell Locke had achieved a similar feat in the neighbouring Goulburn Valley Bowling Association.
Humphreys had beaten Tinning in the club championship final, the latter having won the title on four occasions.
· Kyabram teams broke two records and had several placings at the North Eastern District Fire Brigade Association’s annual championships at Yarrawonga.
Nicholas Prior and Andrew Cooper won the under-14 Y-Coupling competition in a time of 13.01 seconds, when the team of Prior, Cooper, Hayden Key and Corey Staff won the under-14 Wet House for Four Striking One event in a time of 16.3 seconds.
That was two seconds better than the previous record, held by a Kyabram team, from 1998.
The Kyabram team was coached by Rod Prior and Karl Treloar.
2012
· Fire Brigade all-rounder Scott Hearn produced one of the few highlights for the Kyabram association at the Melbourne Country Week cricket carnival.
In the Wednesday game against Warrnambool he bagged a hat-trick after being thrown the ball when the opposition was 1-100 early in its innings.
It initiated a collapse and Warrnambool was 8-133 soon after before recovering to 191. Kyabram only managed 92 in reply, but Hearn’s feat remained the highlight of the carnival.
· Kyabram won its eighth Kyabram District Cricket Association under-17 title with a comfortable win against Cooma-Girgarre.
Brad Power’s five-wicket haul meant the Kyabram batters only required 68 runs for victory, a feat they achieved for the loss of two wickets.
