Last Saturday he played his 150th reserves grade game with the Bombers, who accounted for Echuca to hold top spot on the ladder with one loss for the season.
Steve’s record is believed to be unique, as he could be the first Kyabram player to appear 150 times with the reserves side. He is also credited with playing nine senior games with the club.
But the strongly-built utility shrugged off the well-wishers — and there were plenty — by thanking the club for having him.
I don’t think there has been a player in my time who has played as many reserves games as Steve.
Max Murley, who won four Abikhair medals with Kyabram in the GVL reserves competition in the 1960s and early 1970s, would have played a lot of reserves games, but also made plenty of senior appearances with the Bombers.
So did Ron Cooper, who finished his career with the Bombers as I was starting mine.
Steve’s commitment to Kyabram is more creditable, as he works in Melbourne with former Kyabram star Lachy Smith in the plumbing game and has been a traveller for most of his games with the club.
Dust off the cricket gear
Kyabram Fire Brigade Cricket Club is staging its first training session for the 2025-26 Goulburn Murray Cricket season this Sunday.
The session will kick off at 11am under coach Jon Varcoe and will be followed by a barbecue.
Varcoe said any new players in the area looking to play cricket this season would be welcome to attend Sunday’s first training session.
Club maps out pre-season sessions
Kyabram Cricket Club is also heading into its pre-season campaign.
The Cricket Shepparton club has training sessions planned for this Sunday, September 14 and September 21 at the Ky recreation reserve, with all sessions commencing at 10am and catering for under-16 and senior grade players.
Further Wednesday training sessions starting at 5.30pm at the Kyabram P-12 College have been arranged for September 3, 10 and 17.
All current players and prospective recruits are urged to attend the training sessions.
Lindon to step aside
Another new coaching appointment in the GVL for next season.
Shepparton co-coach for the past four years Ted Lindon is stepping down and has been replaced by another club legend, Jason Wells, who will share the role with Xavier Stevenson.
A key defender, Lindon is unsure whether he will continue his playing career next season at this stage, preferring to see how the Bears’ upcoming GVL finals campaign goes.
