He has been named as part of the Australian team for the Triathlon World Championships grand final in Wollongong this October.
The 20 year-old qualified for the individual sprint triathlon event race on Friday, October 17, which includes a 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run.
He will also compete in the age-group mixed relay world championships on Sunday, October 19, which is a team relay with two males and two females each competing in a mini triathlon of a 300m swim, 5.2km bike and run relay race legs of just under 1.4km.
White said he was looking forward to testing himself at the highest level and representing Australia.
“It is very exciting. At the World Championships, I get to compete against all the super talented people my age.”
This is not the first time White has competed in high-level competition.
In August last year he competed at the World Championships Series, and regularly competes at other major events around Australia.
“I’ve gone to different places for triathlon, Townsville for the World Championships, Gold Coast, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Batemans’ Bay, they’re the main ones.
“You’ve got to get points to qualify for the World Champs by racing at those different events to qualify, which I’ve done.
“I’ve driven to most of them, but had to fly to Townsville. That’s difficult with a bike.”
The Triathlon World Championships takes a fair amount of training, which White fits into a busy schedule. It’s strenuous, but he enjoys it.
“Six out of seven days a week I usually train for triathlon, so most days I have some form of training.
“I usually do a total of 3km swimming, 80km riding and 15km running a week.
“It all depends on how long and tough the intensity of the training I’m doing is.
“For example, if you ride uphill it’s not as far, but there is plenty of work. It’s pretty intense training.”
“My family has a crop farm and dairy farm, where I work, so I’ve got a fair bit on.
“Sometimes I train individual parts, and sometimes I do combo training of the sections. For example, go for a run then do a ride on the exercise bike.
“That part of triathlon makes it enjoyable - that you can train each leg.
“If there is one section you want to improve at or get a faster time in, you can focus on that section.”
As for what he’s aiming for at the upcoming World Championships, White said it’s “just to get faster”.
“That’s always the most enjoyable thing - to be in as good a form as you can be in, and to reach for your own personal best that you can achieve.”
White has training support through Thrive Endurance’s team triathlon coaching, which runs through Jason Shields from the Shepparton Triathlon Club.
He’s one of six from the training team going to Wollongong.
During summer, his training includes regular trips to Deniliquin.
“Thrive makes up training plans for you. I don’t go to Shepparton as it’s just too far, but they’re great.
“I go to Deni Tri Club in Deni over the summer, but you can’t do it in winter as it gets too dark.
“I use that as training. It’s really great race training, race simulation, and they’ve got a great course there.
“There is a kind of handicap, but you get to know roughly when everyone will finish so you can sort of race each other, which is really fun.
“I also use bike trainer Zwift too, which has training plans which is a bike trainer that can create resistance.
“Barooga ARC is where I do my pool training.”
White said he was inspired to get into triathlon by his family.
“My parents have been into triathlons, and so I decided I wanted to do it as well.”
“My parents being in it is inspiring, and they both encourage each other.”
