In greeting the 109 diners at last Wednesday’s mid-week dinner, acting club president Laurie Bridgeman issued a big welcome to all participants at this year’s September Tournament - its resumption after a two-year absence due to the coronavirus pandemic.
YMGCR’s Gerard Sleeman and Bayview Golf Club’s Helen Owens received huge applause when announced as prize winners, finishing runner-up in B Grade Lake Course, with a score of 75.5 behind Cumberland Country Golf Club pair Stewart and Janette Manson with 72.625.
“I welcome all members – you are the backbone of the club, very supportive of the club - and thank you for your support of the tournament and the numbers here tonight,” Mr Bridgman said.
Michelle Thornell and Scott Drummond from Cerberus Golf Club came second in A Grade to the Hancocks with a score of 73.75.
“Welcome to all our visitors, some of whom have been coming here for very, very long times. Without you the club would not be running the tournament. To those visitors attending for the first time, we hope you return.”
Pictured at last Wednesday’s dinner was Tuesday’s stableford event winner on the Murray Course with 36 points off a handicap of 12 was local Neville Hawke.
The acting club president expressed his delight at the competition courses, the Murray and the Lake. “I congratulate Chris Burgess (course superintendent) and the ground staff, and the Mum and Dad Army of volunteers. You had a very difficult time with the rain and overflow of the Murray but you presented the courses in a brilliant manner,” Mr Bridgeman said.
“And to Evan Droop and the team in the Pro Shop, thank you on a wonderfully organised tournament.”
Mr Bridgeman referred to the absence of popular president Gil Cunningham who could not be at the dinner because of health issues. The acting president relayed Gil’s message: “Unfortunately I can’t be here tonight but I hope you all have a good night.”
Acting club president Laurie Bridgeman, flanked by men’s captain Peter Warner and acting lady captain Donna Hancock.
As acting president, Mr Bridgeman hit his words straight down the fairway, was well received and discreet when not naming the two males who played Wednesday’s Mixed Pinehurst event with acting First Lady Chris Bridgeman and Joanne Ryan, simply labelling the males as “underachievers”.
But the year continues to be rewarding for reigning lady A Grade club champion and Champion of Champions Donna Hancock. Donna and husband Ian had the best overall score of 70.25 on the Lake Course. Quite often in a husband-wife team, it doesn’t all go well. The Hancocks, however, jelled. “We combined well. The course was fantastic. We just played well,” the male partner said in his speech. In second position were Cerberus Golf Club’s Michelle Thornell and Scott Drummond with 73.75.
On the Murray Course, locals Carol Gurney and Michael Rayner collected first prize after their score of 72.875 from David Gregson and Leonie Carswell from Chirnside Park Country Club, with 73.25.
Men’s captain Peter Warner added his praise in respect of Chris Burgess and Evan Droop, describing them as the best in the business.
Diners enjoyed a delicious three-course meal, and many danced and sang to the excellent music by the 2013-formed duo Paul and Linda of Me & The Girl.
