After a huge summer of racing, the end of the long course season is fast approaching, with local swimmers making the most of their final championship opportunities.
The Ovens and Murray District Swimming Association held its Championship Meet at the weekend, the grand final of its summer season, which was held at the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre.
The two-day event attracted 241 swimmers from eight clubs across the district, from Albury, Wodonga, Corowa, Wangaratta and Yarrawonga, all vying for championship medals and new personal best performances.
With qualifying times required for entry, the meet saw all strokes and distances contested, providing a true test of each swimmer’s preparation and consistency across the season.
Yarrawonga Mulwala was represented by 17 swimmers, many competing across both days.
The championship meet serves as a key benchmark of the hard work invested throughout the summer, with personal best times the ultimate reward.
The team, supported by coaches Lyndon Hart, Kevin White and Jocelyn Cameron, enjoyed a highly successful weekend, achieving a remarkable 53 personal best times across the two days.
Their efforts translated into an impressive medal tally of four gold, five silver and eleven bronze medals, a fantastic return at district championship level.
Among the standout performances:
Harriett Alexander (Girls 10 years) achieved two impressive personal bests, taking 8.50 seconds off her 50m Butterfly and 6.90 seconds off her 100m Breaststroke.
Finn Angwin recorded five personal best swims, including a strong 2.22-second improvement in his 50m Butterfly.
Billy Archibald (Girls 11 years) produced a remarkable 19.13-second personal best in the 100m Freestyle, and a further 1.07sec off her previous time in the 50m Freestyle, cementing her qualifying time in the event for next January’s Vic LC Country Championships.
Alex Bridgeman (Girls 12 years) clocked a 6.92-second personal best in the 100m Breaststroke and 2.95sec in the Girls 12 years 50m Backstroke.
Flynn Cox delivered seven personal bests, highlighted by a 5.79-second improvement in the Men’s 200m Freestyle, achieving a qualifying time for Vic SC Country Championships in August, and a 2.90-second drop in the 100m Freestyle to secure a silver medal.
Olivia Deglaitis recorded three personal bests, including 5.77 seconds off her 50m Freestyle and 9.23 seconds off her 50m Backstroke in the Girls 10 years age group.
Jacob Halili swam two significant personal bests, dropping 6.69 seconds in the 100m Freestyle and 4.99 seconds in the 50m Backstroke, earning a bronze medal.
Jackson Maxted achieved six personal bests, including a 2.19-second improvement in the Boys 15 years 100m Freestyle to secure a qualifying time for January’s Vic LC Country Championships and a place in the Men’s 100m final. He also took an impressive 8.34 seconds off his 200m Freestyle.
Joc Maxted recorded five personal bests, including 5.98 seconds in his 50m Backstroke and 0.65 seconds in his 50m Breaststroke, with the latter earning him a bronze medal.
Dakota Robertson achieved four personal bests, highlighted by a 13.52-second improvement in her 100m Freestyle and 6.21 seconds in her 50m Butterfly.
Emma Thomas rounded out a highly successful meet with four personal bests, including an 8.66-second improvement in her 100m Freestyle, and claimed an amazing four gold medals.
With championship medals, qualifying times and a host of personal bests achieved, Yarrawonga Mulwala has capped off a strong district season and now looks ahead to its remaining end-of-season commitments with confidence.
