Tennis Club championships get underway
The prestigious Club Championships were held over the weekend, and it was fantastic to see 95 club members competing across two days. The courts were filled to capacity for most of the time, and it was wonderful to see so many families participating.
In a relatively new initiative, the Junior Club Championships kicked off on Saturday morning and continued into Sunday. Players competed across four different age groups, with each participant taking part in two brackets.
Some draws were particularly strong, with the 14/U Boys category the largest, featuring 19 players.
A few determined players played well into Sunday, completing an impressive nine sets of singles over the weekend, a sensational achievement.
Most events have concluded, but a few finals are still to be played, so a full list of winners will appear next week.
The Senior Club Championships took place on Sunday, and it was great to see so many members enjoying a hit.
Events included Open Singles, 18/U Singles, 35+ Singles, and Open Doubles.
Some matches are complete, while remaining matches will be played over the next week.
The Open Finals promise excitement, with siblings Lucy Bassett and Tess Bassett set to replay last year’s ladies final.
In the men’s final, the winner of Damian Cook vs. John Brunner will take on Jack Bassett.
These matches will be played over the next fortnight.
Wilby and District
The semi-finals of the Wilby and District Tennis Association were contested on Friday night, with an impressive turnout of juniors, showcasing the future of the competition.
Top-placed Telford hosted fourth-placed Burramine on the grass at Yarrawonga. Telford got off to a flying start, with their men winning 5 sets to 1.
Andrew Banks and Andrew Brew were in fine form, winning all of their matches. Burramine fought back in the ladies, winning 6 sets to 0, with Tess Bassett, Olivia Lewis, Kirsty Skene, and Hayley Bennett all playing beautifully.
Despite Burramine taking a five-game lead into the mixed, Telford regained control, winning 3 sets to 1 and securing overall victory on games by seven. It was a great night of tennis for all.
Second-placed Tungamah hosted third-placed Savernake. Tungamah’s men continued their excellent form, winning 6 sets to 0, with Josh Buerckner, Thomas Lawrence, Tague Saunders, and Ernie Buerckner all performing strongly.
Savernake bounced back in the ladies’ matches, winning 4 sets to 2.
Tungamah finished strongly in the mixed, winning all four sets and advancing to the Grand Final. Savernake can reflect on a fantastic season with many strong performances.
This Friday, the Grand Final will take place between Telford and Tungamah at Yarrawonga.
These two teams have been the powerhouses of the competition for many years, promising an exciting contest.
Following the match, the premiership cup will be presented, along with the most valuable player awards and junior encouragement awards. Spectators are encouraged to attend.
Saturday morning juniors
Hot Shots and Coaching groups enjoyed another morning of junior tennis. Despite the very hot conditions, the 10:20 group attended one of the earlier sessions, keeping the coaches busy and creating a fantastic atmosphere.
This week, the program returns to the regular schedule following the Club Championships. The final round of Premier League will be played. The ladder after Round 2 stands as: Power 36, Demons 30, Saints 22, and Blues 14.
Thursday ladies tennis
Season Two of Thursday Ladies Tennis continued last week, now halfway through its six-week schedule.
Running two seasons per year has proven successful, as players do not need to commit for three or four months.
The standard of tennis has been high, with many long rallies. Several players enjoyed a refreshment and chat after matches on a beautiful night.
In the first match, Birrell and Joint had close sets, with Birrell winning 4 sets to 2. Current Club Champion Lucy Bassett, filling in, displayed her class by winning all her matches.
Inglis and Hon mirrored this scoreline, with Inglis emerging victorious.
No player won all three sets, highlighting the closeness of the contest.
Jones and Hunter played the final match of the night, with Jones proving far too strong, winning 5 sets to 1.
Zoe Jones and Alice Cooper combined effectively to secure all their sets.
The ladder after Round 2 is: Jones 20, Inglis 13, Hunter 11, Joint 11, Hon 10, Tomljanovic 10, Birrell 9.
Tuesday men’s tennis
The Tuesday Men’s Tennis competition continued last week, with plenty of banter and enjoyment.
A slight delay in pizza delivery allowed for even more animated post-match analysis.
This week marks the final round of the home-and-away season before finals commence.
Highlights included:
- Laver defeating Djokovic 4 sets to 2 after many close sets, with fill-in Adam Inchbold winning all his sets.
- Nadal defeating Becker 5 sets to 1, including two 7-5 sets. Andrew Brew and Jim Zanin remain undefeated.
- A thrilling match between Wilander and Connors ended 3 sets all, with Wilander taking the night by 4 games.
- Sampras were ruthless against McEnroe, winning 6 sets to 0, with Andrew Beggs, Dave Porter, and Les Ryan in fine form.
- Edberg consolidated their position with a 5-1 win over Borg, with brothers Page, Nev, and Gary excelling.
- Lendl defeated Federer 4 sets to 2, with Mitch Moore in great form.

Goulburn Murray tennis
The penultimate round of Goulburn Murray Tennis was played on Saturday under very warm conditions.
Yarrawonga’s Division 3 side travelled to fourth-placed Nathalia and delivered their best performance of the season, defeating Nathalia 8 sets to 1.
Danielle Lawrence, Elli Buerckner, and Amy Lairson dominated the ladies’ matches, while Josh Buerckner won both his doubles matches.
Xavier Chessells and Thomas Lawrence split their doubles matches narrowly, and Yarrawonga swept the mixed doubles, making it a memorable afternoon.
Numurkah’s Division 1 side faced Shepparton in a match that would determine top place.
The match was closely contested, with Jack, Lucy, and Tess Bassett each winning two of their three matches.
Numurkah won on sets 7-4, but Shepparton claimed victory by four games, consolidating their top position on the ladder.
Numurkah’s Division 2 team faced another heat-out, marking their seventh instance in 2026 without playing, a remarkable streak.
Rock up and play sessions
YLTC continues its social aggregate-style tennis with sessions for ladies on Tuesday mornings from 9:00 a.m., and for men on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 a.m. Attendance is flexible, but once you try it, it’s hard to stop!
