The Goulburn Murray Tennis Association held its annual Gather Round on the weekend.

Yarrawonga was fortunate to host Division Three which involved 14 different teams from across the north-east of Victoria.
Yarrawonga’s courts were in sensational condition and everyone in attendance was in full praise of work of the local grounds team headed by Michael Sheahan.
There was some excellent tennis played in tricky windy conditions. Besides the tennis the highlight of the day was the quality of the afternoon teas. They were simply superb.
Yarrawonga took on Kialla Park. This week there were two debutants with Kirsty Skene and Yarrawonga’s 1962/63 Club Champion Noel Thomas having a hit.
The sets were very close with Kialla Park winning seven sets to three. Yarrawonga nearly stole the points though as tennis is won and lost on games won. Kialla Park winning 61 games to 59. Yarrawonga’s highlight was a strong 6/1 singles win to Xavier Chessells and an 8/0 doubles win by Danielle Lawrence and Kirsty Skene.
All Division One teams travelled to Euroa. Numurkah played Shepparton in a replay of last year’s Grand Final.
Shepparton was able to gain some revenge winning eight sets to four. Tess Bassett played well narrowly losing each of her three sets.
The Division Two section gathered in Nathalia. Numurkah took on the extremely powerful Kyabram combination.
Kyabram proved too strong winning 10 sets to one. Making her Numurkah debut Hayley Bennett battled hard as did Ellen Bruce.
Wilby and District
Round Four of the Wilby and District Tennis Association was played on the weekend. There was some fantastic tennis across the three matches.
The highlight of the weekend was Tungamah fielding a team with the oldest player being 16 years of age.
Association historian Dario Prighel is extremely confident this is the youngest team ever in the long history of the competition.
Telford hosted Wilby on the grass courts on Friday night. Matches were extremely close resulting in a very late finish.
Telford won the mens four sets to two with youngster Finn Mitchell best on court winning all of his sets.
The ladies section was very close with each team winning three sets and Telford sneaking home by two games 27 to 25. Wilby’s Amy Lairson continued her great form to win all of her matches.
Telford finished the night of strongly winning three sets to one. Telford winning overall 82 games to 59 to take the eight points.
The second match at Yarrawonga on Friday saw Burramine play Mulwala. In a rubber played in great spirits the mens section was very close with the sets shared three all with Mulwala winning by three games.
Indicating how close it was no man was able to win all three sets. Burramine bounced back in the ladies to win five sets to one with Hayley Bennett and Amber Brown combining well to win all of their sets.
Burramine won three sets to one in the mixed to win overall 79 games to 50. Burramine six points and Mulwala two points for the night.
Tungamah took the school bus out to Savernake with their enthusiastic group of youngsters. Savernake started strongly to win the mens four sets to two with Savernake’s youngster Finn Bruce winning all of his sets.
Tungamah reversed this result in the ladies winning four sets to two with Kiera Buerkner not dropping a set.
Tungamah won the mixed three sets to one to win the day 80 games to 61. Tungamah took six points to Savernake’s two.
After round four the ladder is Tungamah 25, Telford 23, Savernake 22, Burramine 12, Wilby eight, Mulwala six.
This week on Friday the battle of Yarrawonga takes place between Burramine and Telford and Mulwala will host Tungamah. On Saturday Savernake will visit Tungamah.
Thursday Ladies Tennis
The Thursday Ladies played round three of their season last week in perfect conditions. The standard of the tennis was high.
Thanks to the fill-ins that play each week to ensure everyone gets a hit. Most of the matches were very close ensuring the night was finished in near darkness.
Cornflakes and Weeties had a great battle with the sets shared three each. Weeties snuck home by five games 30 to 25. Nicole Dowling was best on court winning all of her sets.
Coco Pops snuck home against Just Rights four sets to two. Indicating how close the rubber was Just Rights only lost by four games. Best for Coco Pops was junior Nat Linehan who won didn’t drop a set.
Rice Bubbles had a night out against Nutri Grains winning all six sets. The combination of Zoe Jones, Chris Hawkins, Claire Primmer and Alice Cooper were all in great form.
Cheerios played well against Special Ks winning five sets to one. Best players for Cheerios were Amber Brown and Eliza Lawrence.
Fruit Loops has a similar result against Fruity Bites with a five sets to one win. Lucy Bassett and Donna Head combined very well to be undefeated.
The ladder after round three is Rice Bubbles 20, Coco Pops 14, Fruit Loops 14, Cheerios 13, Fruity Bites 12, Special Ks 11, Weeties 11, Nutri Grains 10, Cornflakes 10 and Just Rights five.
Kids having a ball
Saturday morning tennis returned this week after the long weekend. This week the junior coaches were acknowledged for the wonderful work they do with both the Hot Shots and the coaching groups.
Each week they provide varied activities designed to improve the skills of the juniors. The coaches are also excellent role models for the juniors.
The junior playing matches completed a round robin with most groups playing two sets of doubles and a set of singles.
Group winners were Finn Angwin, Finn Bruce, Jack Carmichael, Thomas Lawrence, Taylor Lewis, Alex Hemphill, James Okane, Sam Kennedy, Lenny Robinson, Jack Cummins, Sam Hicks, Taylah Chessells, Claire Pearce, Sophia Connell, Annabelle Sandral, Faith Stevenson, Lucinda Moar and Alice Withers.
This week the older players will commence a three-week Premier League competition which is always very popular.
Teams will be created this week. The younger players will play round robins as usual.
Tuesday Mens Tennis
The Tuesday Mens competition will begin this Tuesday. Organiser Ash Wheaton has been very busy creating 13 evenly matched teams and these have been disseminated.
Fill-ins are always needed if you would like to be added to this list. It can be guaranteed there will be some sore bodies on Wednesday morning.
North East Veterans
The North East Veterans circuit had their tournament in Tatura on Sunday. Four of Yarrawonga’s members had a hit with John Brunner winning his group, Amy Lairson finishing second and Ash Wheaton and Mike Lairson taking out a bronze in their group.
The next tournament is at Euroa on Sunday.
Rock up and play sessions
The YLTC holds social aggregate style tennis on Tuesday morning commencing at 9am for ladies and Wednesday at 1pm for mens social hit.
There is no compulsion to attend each of these on a weekly basis although once you have tried it once it will be hard to not keep going back.
