The prize money for the event is $25,000 and this is spread over singles and doubles events. Some of the players in attendance will be of a calibre just short of playing at the Australian Open.
Play will start at 10am each morning and spectators are encouraged to attend.
Weekend tournaments
It was fantastic to see a substantial number of Yarrawonga members participating in a range of tournaments throughout Victoria on the long weekend. Yarrawonga had players at Cobram, Wodonga, Euroa and Warrnambool, each enjoying competing against new opponents. These tournaments are always fantastic fun and cater for a range of tennis abilities.
Saturday morning juniors
Hot Shots and coaching groups enjoyed another morning of junior tennis.
With conditions perfect for tennis, it was great to see how well all of the juniors were hitting the ball. The progression of these groups has been very pleasing to see.
The younger players who play match play were broken into two groups.
Ollie Page won the most games in the boys’ group, while Leah Moore and Penny Perkins won the most games in the girls’ group.
Next week there will not be any junior tennis as it is the Labour Day long weekend.
The following week, all junior tennis will be held on Friday evening commencing at 6.00 p.m., due to the unavailability of our courts on Saturday morning.
The final Saturday of junior tennis will be on Saturday, February 21.
Thursday Ladies Tennis
Season Two of Thursday Ladies Tennis continued last week. It was the final night of the regular season and the matches were played in great spirits, with many very long rallies.
Inglis all combined well to have a 5 sets to 1 win over Birrell. Hayley Bennett and Norma Toms both played very well to win all of their sets.
Top-placed Jones continued their good form to win against Tomljanovic 4 sets to 2. Claire Primmer was hitting the ball nicely to be undefeated.
Joint and Hunter was the match of the night. Both teams finished on three sets each, with Joint winning the night by a single game, 29 to 28. Indicating how close the night was, none of the players won all three sets.
The ladder after Round 4 is: Jones 31, Inglis 24, Joint 21, Hunter 18, Hon 18, Tomljanovic 14, Birrell 13.
This week the traditional end-of-season rankings shootout will take place.
This matches players of similar abilities for the night. Following the matches there will be pizza, refreshments and the presentation of awards.
Tuesday Mens Tennis
In a first for the season, Tuesday Mens tennis last week was washed out.
This was meant to be the semi-finals, which means they will now be played this week.
In the A Grade semi-finals, Edberg will take on Becker and Lendl will play Nadal.
The other teams will also participate in B and C Grade finals, ensuring everyone still gets a hit.
Goulburn Murray Tennis
This weekend Numurkah’s Division 1 team will take on Shepparton at Cobram on Saturday.
Numurkah will be hoping for a win to move straight into the Grand Final.
Good luck to Grant Chappell, Jack Bassett, Lucy Bassett and Jack Bassett.
Rock up and play sessions
The YLTC holds social aggregate-style tennis on Tuesday mornings commencing at 9am for our ladies and on Wednesday at 9am for our men’s social hit.
There is no compulsion to attend each week, although once you have tried it once it will be hard not to keep going back.
Presentation Night
This season has been very successful and, to celebrate, our Presentation Night will be held on Sunday, March 22.
The evening will commence at 5.30pm and conclude by 7.30pm. On the night, Club Champion, Premier League and other Saturday morning trophies will be presented.
As we have done in the past, the main meal will consist of a range of pizzas and each family in attendance is asked to bring a dessert. Drinks will be available for purchase.
The cost of the night is $10 per person or $30 per family.
