Organiser Narelle Bassett was very happy to announce there are ten teams for the seven week season.
Names had been entered individually with the aim of creating even matched teams. Many players hadn’t had a hit since last season, but it didn’t take long for the rallies to develop.
The weather was perfect for tennis and with the courts in great condition with all involved having a fantastic night.
Fruit Loops and Cornflakes had a tight battle all night and at the end they couldn’t be split with the teams finishing three sets apiece and equal on 24 games each.
Current Club Champion Lucy Bassett was in excellent form winning all of her sets.
Special Ks and Fruity Bites were almost as equally close with each team winning three sets with Fruity Bites claiming the night 27 games to 25.
Loz Wallace was best on court not dropping a set for the night.
Coco Pops combined very well to win their rubber five sets to one against Weeties. Best for Coco Pops were Kate Porter and Nat Linehan who both won their three sets.
Rice Bubbles and Just Rights had the same scoreline with Rice Bubbles claiming five sets. Chris Hawkins and Alice Cooper were in good early season form to win all of their matches.
The final match of the night also saw a tied result with Cheerios and Nutri Grains both finishing on 23 games after winning three sets each. Indicating how close the match was, noone was able to win all of their matches.
The ladder after round one is Rice Bubbles seven, Coco Pops seven, Fruity Bites five, Fruit Loops four, Cornflakes four, Cheerios four, Nutri Grains four, Special Ks three, Weeties one and Just Rights one.
Goulburn Murray Tennis
The Goulburn Murray Tennis Association continued on Saturday with round two.
Yarrawonga’s Division three team made the long trip to Karramomus. Yarrawonga’s squad included three debutants Al Angwin and juniors Lara Angwin and Elli Buerckener.
With Xavier Chessells, Thomas Lawrence and Danielle Lawrence finalising the team the squad had four players 16 or younger.
It was a tough day at the office as Karramomus are early favourites for the flag and won the day nine sets to zero.
Yarrawonga’s strong relationship with neighbouring club Numurkah continues this season allowing Yarrawonga club members to play a high standard of tennis.
Numurkah took on Nathalia in Division one. The contest was very close all day with sets tied six all with Numurkah winning the day by three games.
Tess Bassett played very well winning her singles, doubles and losing her mixed doubles in a tiebreaker.
Kids having a ball
Saturday mornings juniors were back for the third week and it was terrific to see the kids on the courts having a hit.
With 205 players signed up for the various programs it is going to ensure a great season.
The Hot Shots and Coaching Groups participated in a range of activities under the tutorage of current Club Champions Jack Bassett and Lucy Bassett.
They were both aided by other junior coaches who do a wonderful job each week. Parental involvement was fantastic, and the level of improvement is obvious after only a few weeks.
The number of players participating in matches was again high. A few were missing with a basketball tournament which meant there was a single spare court which is rare.
The format for the week involved players in a group of four playing doubles and singles. The court winners were Tague Saunders, Hudson Matthews, Ernie Buerckner, Ed Withers, Tully Ellis, Sam Kennedy, Beau Lawrence, Jack Farr, Faith Stvenson, Annabelle Sandral, Kiera Buerckner, Brydie Pearce, Poppy Robinson, Sam Hicks and Annabelle Bueckner.
There will be no junior tennis this weekend as it is the Melbourne Cup long weekend.
Wilby Tennis Competition
Round two of the Wilby and District Tennis Association was played on the weekend. It was fantastic to see the competition back again for another season.
With a mixture of youth and experience in all teams, each encounter is played in great spirits.
Mulwala hosted Telford at Lonsdale Reserve. The mens divisions was very close with each team winning three sets. Telford won this section by eight games despite Mulwala’s Ryder Leith winning all of his sets.
Telford won the ladies section four sets to two with Claire Pearce best on winning three sets. Telford finished strongly to win all four mixed games. Overall Mulwala by 32 games to claim all eight points.
Tungamah hosted their neighbour Wilby. Tungamah proved they are likely to be back-to-back premiers with a strong win over Wilby.
Tungamah’s men consisting of Josh Buerckner, Thomas Lawrence, Harry Wren and Ernie Buerckner were all undefeated. Likewise their ladies team of Elli Buerckner, Kiera Buerckner, Billie Buerckner and Charlotte Wren also won all of their matches.
A clean sweep in the mixed meant Tungamah took all eight points. Full credit to Wilby who battled hard in every match.
Burramine was supposed to host Savernake on Friday night. Burramine’s skipper Jason Bassett misread a text message and thought Savernake had forfeited.
Savernake actually had a team. His team therefore was a no show allowing Savernake to take the eight points. An appointment with Sandra Heaney Optometrist has been booked for Burramine’s skipper.
After round two the ladder is Tungamah 14, Savernake 12, Telford 12, Mulwala four, Wilby four, Burramine two.
This week Tungamah will host Telford on Friday night.
On Saturday Burramine will travel to Wilby and Mulwala will make the trek to Savernake.
