Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort’s September 2023 tournament attracted 875 entries from golfers of over 50 clubs, mainly in Victoria for last week’s five-days of glorious sunshine.

“Welcome to everyone. The weather’s been sensational. A big thank you to all our visitors and members for playing in this event,” club vice president Andrew Shell told the approximate 100 diners at the mid-week dinner after Wednesday’s Mixed Pinehurst competition.

Mr Shell praised the work of CEO Peter Savy and his team, Evan Droop and his Pro Shop team and the course superintendent Chris Burgess and his team singling out assistant course superintendent Andrew Johnson for his tireless work during some enforced absence by Chris.
“How magnificent do our two golf courses look?” the vice president asked diners. “We’ve had our challenges over the past 12 months with floods but the courses are in first class condition.”
Nearest the Pin (NTP) winners last Wednesday included John Wilson, Michelle Thornell (Cerberus), Philip Johansen and Julie Kirchin.
Murray Course A Grade runner-up Peter Crothers praised everything about the annual tournament. “It’s a great tournament and sensational every year,” the 72-year-old retired bank manager formerly of Phillip Island said.
“We’ve been up here five years and loved every minute of it.” Peter and wife Nola finished second on a count-back with 74.5 behind the winners Owen Walsh and Roslyn Ryan on 72.375.
B Grade winners were Warrnambool’s Leigh and Karan Henry with 71.75 ahead of Franziska Chirnside and Phillip Newth with 72.875 (countback).
Last Tuesday’s nearest the pin specialist Rochelle Droop with son and Pro Shop tournament helper Baxter Droop. Rochelle had three NTPs on the Murray Course, helping her to 36 points behind the winning score of 38 points.
Carol Szefky and Lewis Scerri were A Grade winners on the Lake Course with 68, edging out John Payne and Lorraine Christie who carded a 69.
Helen and Vin Slattery won B Grade with 71.625 from Tim and Kath Clarke on 74.
Diners loved the three-course delicious meal and the brilliant music of Cobram’s Jade Camden who played to a packed dance floor. That great music of the 1960s and 1970s including The Beatles and ABBA resulted in some excellent dancing by the ladies including an entertaining dup performance by Castlemaine’s Megan and last Tuesday’s YMGCR’s NTP specialist Rochelle.
The excitement of Collingwood supporters being in the finals threatened to derail last Wednesday night. The Chief Executive Officer’s wife Linda Savy was displaying her big Magpie earrings and when asked about the number of golf entries and visiting clubs, Pro Shop head professional replied: “Collingwood to win grand final 2023.”
But the talk got back on the fairways and a great night was had by all.
