On a beautiful Mother’s Day morning, the Yarrawonga Under-12 boys took to the field with fire in their bellies and plenty of motivation to make the mums proud - and boy, did they deliver.
It was a tough start for the Pigeons, with the backline under early pressure.
But the defensive unit stood tall, led by the ever-reliable Parker Cowan, who was rock-solid repelling multiple entries. He was supported by Ed Mulquiney who made a huge effort to sprint deep from centre half-forward to provide crucial cover in defence.
As the game settled, Yarrawonga’s run and carry came to life.
Billy Vagg lit up the ground with his relentless drive, bringing back flashes of his father’s on-field brilliance from years gone by. Briffa added plenty of pace and flair creating space and opening up the game.
Jetta Oughton continued to impress, looking every bit a natural footballer as he launched the ball long into the forward line time and again.
Finn O’Bryan was everywhere, finding plenty of the footy and putting in a consistent four-quarter performance.
On the scoreboard, it was Bobby B who hit the target, slotting an important goal to keep the pressure on the opposition.
The team’s unselfish play and willingness to work for one another paid off, with Yarrawonga running out convincing winners.
Another strong showing from this talented group of young Pigeons who continue to build momentum as the season rolls on.
