The Under 16s Lakers hosted Beechworth at Stan Hargreaves Oval on a glorious Saturday morning for a 20/20 in the last match before Christmas. Yarrawonga won the toss and elected to bat.
Early wickets fell and the Lakers were 4/16 after 7 overs.
Will Murphy and Kade Michael put on a partnership of 10 and Nate Sheridan and Jetta Norrish added 13 together before the team was dismissed for 46 in the 19th over.
Needing a better showing in the field Van Kreeck (0/11 from 3) and Will Murphy (0/6 from 3) opened the attack.
Beechworth was 1/31 when Nate Sheridan (1/17 from 3) took the ball in the 10th.
A lovely delivery flew past the batter and Lucas Eales removed the bails for the Lakers first wicket.
Beechworth passed the Lakers total in the 11th over but the team still had work to do.
In his first over Archie Purtle (1/14 from 2) put the ball up and the batter thought he had cleared the field but in the way was Lucas Tonna.
A fantastically timed vertical leap saw an electric catch that was followed by a celebration by the whole team.
Van Kreeck took a great catch at square leg off Jetta Norrish (1/2) in the 16th. Will Murphy took a stumping off Jace Gove (1/9) in the 17th.
Lucas Eales bowled the 18th and finished the over with figures of 2/0 thanks to catches from Norrish and Purtle.
Purtle took his second catch in the 19th over off the bowling of Jake Walker (1/4).
Beechworth finished 7/93.
The Under 16s hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas, a safe New Year and look forward to seeing everyone after the break.

Bulls prevail in local derby
Yarrawonga Mulwala Bulls 2/114 def Yarrawonga Mulwala Rams 8/74.
The Yarrawonga Mulwala Bulls prevailed in a tense battle on Friday night at Vic Park 2. After overcoming a sluggish start, the Bulls were able to find their rhythm and defeat the Rams after a strong batting display.
The Rams batted first and had the better of the first 10 overs with some powerful hitting from Zane Rickhuss.
The match turned somewhat when Byron Dodd took off the keeping gloves and bowled the first over after the drinks break.
It proved to be a pivotal over as he claimed two crucial wickets, clean bowling both batters. From then on, the Bulls held the ascendancy with wickets falling to Isaac McLarty, Kirsty Plevnik, Zander Gallagher, Ned O’Brien and Michael Smith to see the Rams bowled out for 74.
The run chase started in brilliant fashion for the Bulls with Blair Livingston-Laing playing his best innings for the club, scoring 27 not out, which included five boundaries.
He was well supported by fellow opener Benji Wollington, who constructed a well-crafted 11 from his 15 balls before retiring.
Dodd was next in at the crease and continued his fine form with the bat blasting 22 from his 15 balls, including four boundaries.
The next four batters for the Bulls all retired with Isaac McLarty (16), Finn O’Brien (7), Kirsty Plevnik (6) and Murphy ‘The Big Show’ Doyle (6) all keeping the scoreboard ticking over taking the total to 2-114 after their allotted 20 overs.
This leaves the Bulls at the top of the table going into the Christmas break with the next game in Wangaratta against City Colts on January 20.
A big thanks to number one umpire Steve Smith who does a fantastic job every week as well as Wayne Cooper, chief scorer who is always willing to lend a hand.
The help of these volunteers ensures the games can run and the Bulls are grateful for their contribution.
Hope everyone has a happy and safe Christmas and New Years.
See you all in 2024!
Rams go down to Bulls in derby
Yarrawonga Mulwala Bulls 2/114 def Yarrawonga Mulwala Rams 8/74.
The second instalment of the ‘Locking of the Horns’ match between the Rams and Bulls was a great contest, with Bulls claiming victory in the local derby.
On a delightful summer evening at the Vic Park No 2 oval, the Rams won the bat flip and without hesitation, elected to bat first.
Zaine Rickhuss and Eamon Pickering opened proceedings and got the Rams off to a solid start before Pickering departed.
Rickhuss continued to play a fine array of shots, batting patiently and dispatching the loose ball to the boundary.
At the halfway mark of their innings, the Rams had 46 on the board.
This was on the back of contributions from Jordan Knight (10) and Lachie Brown (11).
The Bulls bowlers started to get on top and the scoring slowed for the Rams, who were eventually dismissed for 74.
Needing to bowl well to defend their total the Rams knew they had to take early wickets. However, the Bulls batsmen played some fine cricket shots and scored freely.
All of the Rams fielders were enjoying the lush surrounds of the Vic Park oval, impressively applying themselves in the field.
Luke Van Den Bosch and George Kennedy each picked up a wicket late in the innings to get some reward for the effort that they had put in.
The Rams will return after the Christmas break looking to build on the positive start they made in the first half of the season, when they return to action against Rovers United Bruck on the twentieth of January.
Under 13 girls make history!
On the perfect Sunday summer’s morning, the Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket Club’s U13s girls took on the might of the Beechworth Wanderers, a club with a long history of girls’ cricket.
The Lakers’ girls arrived with enthusiasm and positivity as they looked to host their historic first ever home game.
Vic Park has never seen a local girls’ team take to the field in a competition match and it created quite the buzz amongst the supportive crowd of spectators.
Captain Kate Giblett was the recipient of a wrong call by the opposition at the toss, and she had no hesitation to send the visitors in. The Lakers Girls took to the field and produced a mighty fine fielding effort.
All catching opportunities were taken and there were plenty of close run out calls.
Rookies Hannah Morris and Heeranya Maharjan opened the bowling and both have shown improvement.
The Stella Hill and Maya O’Brien combination took over and kept the visitors honest, with scoring runs becoming harder as the Lakers patrolled the infield and denied the opposition any easy runs.
With some clean catches taken, the Lakers were growing in confidence, and Paige Bamford’s bowling was spot on, and only made the opposition’s task harder.
Elsie Lidgerwood’s left arm seamers were difficult to deal with, gaining extra bounce from her height.
Lily Lewis and Rosie Lidgerwood were sublime in fulfilling the roles as the most accurate of the hometown bowlers - they both stymied the run rate to a trickle.
Things only went from good to better with Bella Ward, Matilda Thackray, Kate Gilbert and Kirsty Plevnik all bowling magnificently at the death, to miserly finish off the last of the 18 overs and keep the target to 197.
From little things, big things grow. The slow and steady method of Maharjan and Morris got the run chase underway. Maybe a little cautious at times with a few quick singles missed, it is far better to be safe than sorry, and the total was looking healthy.
O’Brien and Hill were hitting the ball extremely well but needed to be louder with their calls and sharper with their running as they would have been the top scorers.
The older and experienced girls were now on their way to the crease, the Lidgerwood sisters, Bamford and Lewis got the benefit of some loose bowling and the boundaries started to accumulate, giving the run rate a huge boost.
Thackray and Ward were cool under the pressure of the chase, Ward deciding to go aerial, and sixes resulted from some mighty fine “tonking”.
Their partnership set up that game for one final assault. Plevnik and Gilbert plundered the bowling attack of the opposition; having worked to a plan, the pair started dealing in boundaries and the hit the scoring accelerator.
The target was passed with two overs to spare and the Lakers Girls, not only recorded their first victory, but are undefeated at the home of local cricket.
The Best Effort Award went to Bella Ward for solid contributions in the field, at bat and with ball in hand.
The girls now break for the school holidays and begin to work with the W&DCA to develop the 2024 Term 1 Fixture.
Congratulations to all players, parents, officials, families and supporters of the All-Girls Cricket program and a sensational first half of the season.
