The Basketball Victoria “Association of the Year Award” acknowledges the associations that have demonstrated over the past 12 months their achievements across all areas of their association, from participation growth through community engagement, program development and being leaders amongst their peers.
All basketball Associations in Victoria are considered, and the chosen winner shows exemplary leadership and progression in all the categories assessed.
Former Yarrawonga Mulwala Basketball Association President, current long term Board member and Program Co-ordinator Amanda Wheaton said YMBA hasn’t been recognised at this level before with the association thrilled with the achievement.
The coveted 2025 Basketball Victoria Association of the Year Award that Yarrawonga Mulwala Basketball Association has claimed.
“It is a first to be recognised amongst our peers at a state level and is testament to many years of work developing our programs, improving our governance, refining our Board structure and working tirelessly to advocate for a stadium in our town,” Ms Wheaton said.
“We are thrilled with the recognition.
“ This award means so much to our association. To have Basketball Victoria recognise the great work we are doing is both exciting and humbling and shows that we are right up there with the best in the state at running successful and progressive programs.
“It is a culmination of years of hard work by past and present committees and the current Board and we couldn’t do it without the help and support of our volunteer committees, coaches, referees, age group managers, assistant coaches and parent helpers.
“For a small country town, we have strong support from our community and this helps drive us to be better each year to provide quality programs for our children, adults, and all abilities athletes.
“In 2024, we won the “Teir 3 Technical Officials Program of the Year” Award at the Basketball Victoria Annual Technical Officials Award Ceremony but that is definitely different to this Association award.”
Basketball Victoria Members, Participation and Growth General Manager David Huxtable said this recognition reflects the remarkable outcomes YMBA continues to deliver for its participants, coaches, officials, families, volunteers, and the broader community.
“YMBA has demonstrated that size is no barrier to impact or ambition,” Mr Huxtable said.
“Operating from a single-court facility, YMBA has achieved exceptional participation growth, delivered innovative and inclusive programs, and strengthened community connections, all while preparing for an exciting next chapter.
“Over the past three years, YMBA’s domestic registrations have grown from 425 in 2022 to 500 in 2024, an impressive 17.8 per cent increase that speaks directly to the strength of your organising, culture, and commitment to providing positive experiences for all participants.
“This growth is even more commendable given your facility constraints.
“A defining milestone for YMBA has been the successful advocacy and collaboration with government partners, securing a $13 million investment for a new two-court facility scheduled to commence construction in 2026. “This achievement will transform basketball in the region and provide a lasting legacy for future generations of players, coaches, and volunteers.
“YMBA’s commitment to community engagement is equally impressive with innovative approaches and a strong sense of identity.
“Most importantly, YMBA’s success is grounded in the passion, dedication, and leadership of its volunteers.
“This award is a testament to your impact, your resilience, and your vision for the future.”
YMBA offers a Junior Domestic Program, Senior Domestic Program, Representative Program, Aussie Hoops beginner Program and an All Abilities Program.
“We are proud that we have been able to offer such quality programs, given the one court school facilities we are fortunate to be able to operate out of,” Ms Wheaton said.
“We look forward to the next few years when we have our new stadium to use. It will be a place to call home and a wonderful addition to our town.”
