Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket Club A Grade have entered the Christmas New Year break with a comfortable 6 wicket win over Benalla at Stan Hargreaves Oval in Yarrawonga.

After losing the toss, YMCC bowled first and took control of the game from the very first ball, claiming the first wicket with the score on 10 and decimating the Benalla lineup to 7 for 71 in the 36th over.
Benalla were able to post 7 for 98 off their 40 overs; with the wickets going to Rory Bartlett with 2 for 7 off 6 overs; Matt Casey 2 for 34 off 6 overs; Matt McCabe 1 for 12 off 8 overs; Harry Wheeler 1 for 14 off 4 overs and Brock McCabe 1 for 23 off 8 overs.
Angus McMillan bowled economically to have figures of 0 for 6 off 8 overs.
Yarrawonga Mulwala in reply with the bat, were never troubled chasing down the total in the 31st over with Josh Lawrence making 26; Ben Irvine 21, Harry Wheeler 20 and Matt Casey 19 not out being the top run scorers.
Heading into the break, the YMCC are ladder leaders and in a strong position to challenge for finals.
The YMCC A Grade return to action on Saturday, January 8 with a clash at Bill O’Callaghan Oval with City Colts.
B Grade
B Grade travelled to Benalla to take on the Benalla Bushrangers in the final round before the Christmas break.
After a quick shuffle of venue from the lake end to the road end of Arundal St, Captain Browning won the toss and elected to bowl in hot and humid conditions.
Browning was in the thick of it early taking two catches at second slip off the bowling of Reece Norman and Harry Barker to have the Bushrangers openers back in the shed with the score on 16.
The Lakers bowlers continued to bowl good line and length.
After a 15 minute break in the middle of the innings due to a thunderstorm passing through, the Lakers were back on the spot and bowling tightly again.
As the pressure of tight bowling continued, so did the wickets through Josh Bozzola, Jett Peters and at the end Harry Barker.
Solid fielding also backed up the bowling with almost all chances being taken away when they presented.
Wicket takers – Reece Norman 1/21, Tom Lovel 1/22, Josh Bozzola 1/8, Harry Barker 3/20 and Jett Peters 4/20. Benalla Bushrangers all out for 109.
Youngster Geoff Montgomery and veteran Rod Peters started the run chase for the Lakers and put together a solid partnership of 62 before Montgomery fell for a well compiled 31.
This brought Bozzola to the crease and he and Peters continued on punishing anything short or over pitched.
The pair put on another 62 runs and got the Lakers past the Bushrangers total with one wicket down.
Peters was the second wicket to fall having dispatched the bowling attack to all parts of the ground and making 59 runs – 50 of which were boundaries or sixes.
Josh Bozzola also amongst the runs with 43.
Jett Peters and Harry Barker continued their good batting form from the previous game with 28 and 20 respectively. Barker falling on the last ball of the day.
The Lakers finishing with 6/194 and a strong win going into the break.
B Grade return on January 8 against Milawa at Lonsdale Reserve Mulwala.
Under 16s
In what was a promising start to the game, YMCC had Wang Maggies all out for 62 in their 20/20 match, with young off spinner TJ Docking taking career best figures of 4 for 9 off 3 overs.
Jobe Fraser and Ollie Cope claimed 2 wickets each and Tom Lovell took an excellent caught and bowled chance.
When it was YMCC’s turn to bat the boys found the going hard as Wang bowled full and had the ball moving around.
Tom Lovell showed good grit to make 9 and Jobe Fraser made his way to a well-made 18 before succumbing to Wang’s good length bowling.
In the end Wang were the better team bowling YMCC out for 54.

Under 14s
The Under 14’s Lakers played Delatite at Mansfield on a cold Saturday morning in a one-day match.
Lakers won the toss and chose to bowl. Van Kreeck took the first wicket of the day clean bowled in the 4th over.
Some strong bowling by Nate Kreeck and Nate Sheridan slowed the run rate in the middle overs.
Jake Walker took a good catch off Kade Michael in the last over.
Delatite ended their innings on 2/107 after 20 overs.
The loss of a couple of quick wickets saw Lakers 3/12 after 5 overs.
A strong bowling performance by Delatite saw the Lakers 7/29 after 10 overs.
Jack Van Den Bosch and Kade Michael put on a partnership of 11 runs in the middle overs.
The Lakers were all out for 48 in the 19th over with Van Kreeck, Kade Michael and Jace Gove top scoring.
The Under 14s wish all the Lakers family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and look forward to being back on the pitch in 2022.
