In February, the Victorian Fisheries Authority saved 40 Macquarie perch and 55 trout cod from Hughes and Seven Creeks on Taungurung Country and relocated them to the Snobs Creek Hatchery following the Longwood bushfire.

The operation, in partnership with DEECA’s Arthur Rylah Institute, protected the fish from ash and debris threatening their habitat.
They are now being cared for in the new Macquarie Perch Recovery Centre, which can breed up to 500,000 Macquarie perch and 500,000 trout cod each year to support recovery in the wild.
Conditions are being monitored to enable the fish’s safe return, alongside other bushfire-rescued species housed at the conservation hatchery.
