The stories of Kyabram

On the Friday evening, a subgroup will present Voices of the Past, drawing on historical editions of the Kyabram Free Press.

The group is going through old copies of the Ky Free Press to collect the stories of Kyabram through articles and letters to the editor, which will be turned into a spoken word performance on the Friday night at the Kyabram Town Hall.

On Saturday, November 7, the group will assist with the AHGATC National Town Crying Championships at Edis Park.

Sunday, November 8 features stories from Kyabram, with selected community submissions performed as readings.

For the Sunday event, the community has been asked to send in stories, poems or skits about things they only know about Kyabram.

Australian National Town Crying Championship Kyabram

The Australian National Town Crying Championship is set to come to Kyabram on November 7, 2026, timed to coincide with the town's 150th anniversary celebrations.

Campaspe Shire Council and Murray River Council town crier and Ancient and Honourable Guild of Australian Town Criers president Judy Campbell will host the event.

Ms Campbell has held the role since 1993, becoming the first officially appointed town crier for the region.

“You need to have volume, sustained performance and accuracy, because if you give out the wrong information and somebody was outside curfew hours and you told them the wrong time, well, that is how ‘don’t shoot the messenger’ came into being,” she said.

Criers will be judged on volume, sustained performance, accuracy, presentation, content, delivery, costume and scroll across two competition cries.

To hear the town criers, the public is encouraged to attend at Edis Park between 11am and 1pm.

Kybram Bush Poets: Banjo's untold tale revealed

Kyabram Bush Poets is presenting bush poet Gregory North in his show 'Banjo 125' at the Kyvalley Hall on Sunday, November 1, 2026.

The show marks 125 years since Banjo Paterson's lecture tour through four states and New Zealand, where he spoke about his experiences as a war correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald and the Melbourne Argus.

“I'm not doing lectures on the Boer War,” Gregory said.

“I do an entertainment show about Banjo’s life and rhymes.

“For my show in Kyabram, people can expect lots of information about Banjo and his life, and their favourite poems recited and maybe some they haven't heard of as well.

The two-hour show, with interval, begins at 2pm at Kyvalley Hall, 534 Scobie Rd, Kyvalley.
