Trump says US-Taliban peace deal ‘close’

US President Donald Trump says there is a good chance the United States will reach a peace deal with the Taliban in Afghanistan.

"I think we're very close," Trump said on a podcast broadcast on iHeart Radio when asked if the United States had reached a tentative deal.

"I think there's a good chance that we'll have a deal... We're going to know over the next two weeks."

Earlier, US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said his country and the Taliban had negotiated a plan for a "seven-day reduction in violence" as part of ongoing peace talks.

"We've said all along that the best, if not only, solution in Afghanistan is a political agreement," Esper said at a NATO defence ministers meeting in Brussels.

"We have the basis for one on the table and we are taking a hard look at it," he added.

"I think peace deserves a chance."
