In 2016, community leaders, Vivian Spilva and Andrew Shell, identified the need for local funding support for the hospital, and formed the Helping Hands fundraising committee with eight volunteers.
Their original focus remains the same today, raising and dispersing funds to assist with medical and patient care equipment, community health initiatives, staff scholarships, and professional development at Yarrawonga Health.
The fundraising efforts by the Helping Hands committee are just part of what has been raised.
The Yarrawonga community, including local clubs, schools, businesses, and individual donations have collectively raised the bulk of donated funds with more than $600,000 in donations being distributed by Helping Hands to support Yarrawonga Health, over the past 10 years.
New Helping Hands chairperson, Leiticia Harmer said all of the donations received by Helping Hands were dispersed within the hospital to assist with patient, resident and staff needs.
“There are criteria’s that each project must meet before funds are dispersed by Helping Hands, and we are very careful to ensure that the benefit of the donation assists as many people and areas of the hospital as possible,” Leiticia said.
CEO Robin Haberecht agreed that Yarrawonga and Mulwala communities’ ongoing support was key to the continual growth of Yarrawonga Health.

Leiticia was also the guest speaker at the annual Lions Club of Lake Mulwala Changeover on July 21 where she gave an update on the organisation’s history, past and present hospital projects, all the result of fundraising and donations supported by the entire community.
All donations and gifts received by Yarrawonga Health’s Helping Hands were protected as tied funds and stay at Yarrawonga Health to provide a supportive healthcare experience for the wellbeing of all patients, residents, and staff.
Leiticia also informed the Lions that over the past 10 years, Helping Hands fundraising events and many hard-earned community donations had raised more than $600,000.

The Changeover, which was held in the Fairway View room at the Golf Club continued after lunch with a report from DG Alison Kazenwadel about their trip to Hong Kong’s Lions International Conference and the installation of the new committee for the coming year.
